Speech sound development...

I am frequently asked what's normal in speech sound development. Take a look at this image to give you a rough idea of the speech sounds we would expect at each age in a typically developing child.

6-12 months - your baby will start babbling at this age and we want to hear a range of sounds in all positions of the mouth.
18-24 months - your child will be saying a range of words by this age. The sounds which should be present in these words are m, n, p, b, h, w, d.
2 years - both m and n should be consistently and accurately used within single words and 2 word phrases.
3 years - p, b, m, n, ng, h, w, k, g, t, d should all be used in words and phrases accurately.
4 years - f, l, s, y, sh, ch will be used in words and sentences accurately.
5-8 years - all sounds should now be mastered. z, r, j, v and th are the last sounds we would expect to be produced with accuracy.

I specialise in working on speech sound delays and disorders and I love working with adults and children to improve the clarity of their speech. I currently have some availability to take on new clients so get in touch to discuss yours or your child's speech needs. www.christywheatleyslt.com

Expressive language development...

Do you often wonder what your child should be saying and at what age?

Expressive language is the ability to make choices, request, ask questions, answer, and tell stories. Speaking, gesturing, writing, body language/facial expressions and vocalisations (e.g. shouting/crying) are all examples of expressive language.

Check out this simple image to give you a rough idea of the
expressive language development we would be expecting as speech and language therapists. Of course every child develops at different stages so don't panic if your child isn't achieving these milestones just yet! I would love to talk to you about your child's expressive language skills if this is something that's concerning you.
