I let her down
Working with someone living with fibromyalgia I felt I'd let them down.
I'd coached others with condition before so I did the same evaluation, same gentle exercises...
She missed her first session and I got a message the next day.
She was in pain for 2 days after.
Struggling with the stairs.
Hard to stand from a chair.
In pain getting off the loo!
To a new PT this would be a badge of honour.
It wasn't, because it put her off.
It taught me an important lesson in coaching.
Treat the person, not the condition.
Even when 2 people have the same conditions:
Back pain
Knee pain
Frozen shoulder
Experience pain different. That means how it's triggered and how long it affects you is different to.
No one can understands your body like you.
That's why a big part of coaching is listening.
