Dear Carers...

As we head into the holiday period, we hope you are able to find moments of rest, connection, and comfort, whatever this time of year looks like for you.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, another tradition, or simply take the opportunity to pause, we wish you peace, joy, and the chance to recharge.

We want to especially acknowledge our incredible carers, who work tirelessly, to ensure our children feel safe, loved, and cared for.

We know that the festive period can be one of the most emotive and challenging times for many of you. Please know that your dedication does not go unnoticed. The stability and warmth you provide have a profound impact on the young people you support, particularly during this season.

Best Wishes
The Evergreen Team

When a child comes to us with the truth, they are trusting us with something precious. Many children learn to hide their feelings because they fear a sharp reaction. When we meet them with calm attention, honesty becomes something they no longer have to worry about.
💛🫂

Three things that help a child stay open:

1. Pause and listen. A quiet moment before you respond shows your child that their feelings matter. 🧏‍♀️💬

2. Thank them for telling you the truth, even if the situation is tough. This builds courage and safety. 🙏🌼

3. Guide them gently. Teach what to do next without scolding or rushing through the moment. 🫶📘

Children bloom when they know their emotions will not be judged. When they feel understood, truth becomes their natural choice.

If yelling was a way your parents communicated it’s really hard to break this learned habit but it’s not impossible.

The biggest step is the commitment to stop yelling and then making a plan, with slow steps, to achieving your goal.

Although there are steps you can take, a few which I’ll share here, I want to you to know that next to committing that you will stop, a crucial part to ending your yelling is self-forgiveness! Forgive yourself over and over and over again and don’t limit how many times you will forgive yourself. As you offer yourself forgiveness, you’ll find that you’ll be able to forgive your children more and more for whatever actions they are doing that’s making you yell. It’s difficult to forgive others if we don’t start with ourselves.

Here are a few things to consider:

I know you’ve heard this before but really, pause and take a deep breath so you can teach yourself to respond instead of reacting by yelling. Pausing creates space between the behavior and your escalating emotions. You also give yourself a chance to recenter.

Identify your triggers and know the warning signs. Learn to recognize when a brewing situation might become triggering for you. This can greatly help you get your emotions under control.

Make an effort to always stop whatever you’re doing and go to your children instead of yelling at them from a distance. This can help to reduce your frustration and at the same time create a new habit.

Yelling isn’t a respectful way to communicate. Listening is. Instead of yelling, try to calmly be present while listening to what your child wants to say. Avoid rushing them, speaking for them or interrupting them. The inability to really listen accompanies yelling.

Many parents were raised with punishment… but children don’t learn best through fear. They learn through guidance, connection, and practice.

Here’s the difference between punishment and discipline – and why it matters.

A tantrum isn’t “naughty.”
Backchat isn’t “disrespect.”
Shutting down isn’t “rude.”
Crying over small things isn’t “overreacting.”

They’re all messages:
📌 “I’m overwhelmed.”
📌 “I don’t feel heard.”
📌 “I’m scared of getting it wrong.”
📌 “I don’t know how to cope with this feeling.”

Children show us their feelings through behaviour long before they can tell us with words.

So your superpower isn’t being the “perfect parent.”
It’s being the safe place.

🧠 Pause before reacting
💛 Get curious instead of furious
🗣️ “What’s really happening for my child right now?”

Connection first → behaviour follows.

You’re not raising a perfectly behaved child.
You’re raising a human who knows they’re loved when they’re at their worst.
And that changes everything. 🤍

❤️ - They are only little Humans like us!

A gentle reminder for today 🌼
Kids have bad days too 🌧️
They get overwhelmed 🫂
They cry for reasons they can’t explain 😢
That doesn’t make them “naughty” — it simply makes them human ❤️

Wow! This is very interesting 🧐 I’d be interested to know if anyone has tried this?

Sour candy can literally help stop a panic attack.

According to mental health experts, the intense flavor acts as a grounding technique—its sharp, jarring taste pulls attention away from overwhelming thoughts and into the immediate physical sensation.

This redirection can help interrupt the cycle of spiraling anxiety, bringing individuals back to the present moment. Additionally, the act of chewing and the surge in saliva production may support the body's calming response, offering a sense of control during distress.

While not a cure or replacement for therapy, this sensory-based strategy can serve as a quick, practical tool in moments of high anxiety. As noted by experts cited by Utah State University, sour candy can be particularly helpful in grounding exercises used during panic attacks. However, they caution that frequent or intense anxiety should always be assessed by a healthcare professional to ensure appropriate long-term care.

Be kind… you never know what happened 20 minutes before the moment you’re judging.

Scene 1:
We wish we could say we haven’t lived this while taking our children out….but sadly, it happens often.

Ignore the tuts. Ignore the stares. Ignore the judgment.
You are doing an amazing job ❤️
