I've been in this industry since 2014 when I started as a corporate Change Coach.

I've heard and seen it all: the good, the bad and the ugly.

So what exactly is coaching?

I like to define it as the art of powerful questioning. At its core, no matter the niche, coaching is about active listening to deeply understand the core of what an individual is struggling with, combined with powerful, intuitive questions and observations that open up a whole new world of understanding.

Coaching isn't simply teaching a strategy (that's training) and if I've learnt anything in my time as a coach, it's that genuinely, more often than not, the person who is being coached already has the knowledge and skills - that is very rarely the problem.

The real problem is usually a combination of limiting self beliefs, a skewed perception of how the world and the people within it operate, low self esteem, overwhelm, chronic stress and misalignment from personal values.

A powerful coach will pick up on your choice of words (as well as the words you DON'T say), your body language, a little inflection in your tone or crack in your voice. These are the clues that tell us where we need to probe more, asking deeper questions which unveil and nurture you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your patterns.

We're not here to give you all of the answers, but what we will do is guide you off that perpetual merry go round that just isn't working anymore, as you move towards a new path aligned with a deep understanding of who you truly are, what you want from life and what needs to change in order for you to get there.

There's a lot of talk these days about implementing boundaries, and let me tell you, I'm absolutely here for it! But what happens when we go further than this, and in an attempt to protect our peace, we actually start putting up walls?

Let's start by understanding the difference...

Boundaries help us to choose relationships that are reciprocal by communicating expectations calmly and clearly. When we're setting boundaries we are able to express our needs and limits without shame, conditions or caveats. Boundaries don't ask the other person to change their identity, values or beliefs, and in not doing so allow us to establish closeness, understanding and mutual respect within a relationship.

Walls on the other hand harm relationships by shutting down when conflicts arise, either through avoidance or demanding that others change to fit the mould we are giving to them. Walls are often rooted in vulnerability, shame, hurt or grudges. They tell us the lie that being self-reliant is safe than fostering interdependence by dismissing others attempts to get close and refusing to collaborate or find a middle ground. They support toxic and imbalanced patterns of relating because they are centred around a deep need to maintain control at any cost.

Whilst both walls and boundaries come from a place of attempting to create safety, only boundaries actually allows us to grow and develop in relationship with others long term. Whilst walls might feels safe in the moment, they keep us stuck in the same cycles, never really getting to the root of the problem.
