We now live in a society that is thankfully recognising mental health more. However, with this comes the desire to over label people. Let’s be honest we have all used google doctor.

It is important to allow children to just bee. Allow them to feel and express their emotions freely but teach them skills to manage them.

This means all feelings are valid. Anger, sadness, disappointment, fear, worry etc are all ok to feel, but if we teach children how to recognise and express them in a safe manner, we can support them in understanding these feelings. We can all feel these feelings without the need for a diagnostic label. Just because we have a cough doesn’t mean we then label ourselves as asthmatic.

Try to stay in the moment and focus on what the behaviour is trying to communicate. It’s ok to not have all the answers, but what is important is that you notice them. Remember google only shows a summary of symptoms.

A little reminder that when we, adults and children are experiencing heightened emotions, we are incapable of actively listening.

During heightened states of emotion, we may say things that we don’t really mean, we are unable to listen, so therefore, cannot see how upset others may be by our actions.

A simple tip to support with this, is to allow space and time for the emotion to cool down. Be mindful that you may feel drained after this encounter, so an offer of a snack or drink to replenish would be useful. After some time has passed and if appropriate, you can talk about what happened.

Anybody else feeling a bit overwhelmed this week? If you’ve been struggling getting back into usual routines, bombarded with school events or exhausted with work demands this is ok. Show yourself some grace and lower expectations of what needs to be done as you ease yourself back in.

Following on from yesterday’s post your school may also have access to NHS services including, the School Nurse team and Reflexions.

School Nurses provide support including, heath assessments, health promotion and wellbeing support using the I Thrive model.

This is a reactive service in response to children who are struggling with their physical health and/or wellbeing.

Reflexions are also a reactive intervention for children who are struggling with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Reflexions provide Cogntive Behavioural Therapy interventions.

At Bee Well we offer proactive interventions that are suitable for all children and young people. We hope by sharing this information it helps to show the differences between us and that there is a need for all of these services for children and young people.

Here at Bee Well we pride ourselves on being a proactive service. This means our current My Feelings and Me programme is open to all children. Thus children do not need to be showing signs of a mental health need. It focuses on much needed mental health education and life skills, that should be available to all.

Your school may have an Elsa (Emotional literacy support assistant.) This is a reactive targeted intervention, for children showing signs of a mental health need.

By sharing this information, we hope to show the differences in support, while highlighting the need for all.

My Feelings and Me is a pro active education programme. The principal aim is to educate children about their feelings. This includes, naming those feelings. When doing this, we explain the terms, ask for situational examples and allow children space to provide their viewpoints.

This programme is not a reactive intervention and therefore, it is open and available to all children.

Following on from yesterday's post we wanted to highlight the importance of explaining words/concepts to your child. For example, if we choose the word respect, we know many schools have this as a school value. Children are able to recite this word but when questioned are unable to explain what it means.

Here at Bee Well we are passionate about educating children and allowing them to use terms that they understand.

When you teach your child a new word, do you explain what it means?

We often hear in our groups, children share for example, their school values. However, when asked they do not know what they mean.

Childhood is:

• Jumping in muddy puddles
• Dressing up as your favourite character
• Creating masterpieces of art to proudly display at home
• Savouring ice cream cones as they melt down your hand
• Believing in magic
• Dancing like no one is watching
• Climbing trees
• Making up games with everyday objects

Have you ever consider how we expect children to function differently to adults? Children are often told:

• Stop fiddling with your hair
• Stop biting your nails
• Stop talking
• Sit still
• You are being too loud
• Drink bottle needs to stay in you tray

Does this happen in the classroom? Now think as an adult in your workplace:

• Do you talk to your colleagues?
• Do you tap your pen or chew it?
• Do you go to the toilet when you need to or do you ask permission?
• Do you make a drink when you fancy one at break and bring it to your desk?
