Have you ever consider how we expect children to function differently to adults? Children are often told:

• Stop fiddling with your hair
• Stop biting your nails
• Stop talking
• Sit still
• You are being too loud
• Drink bottle needs to stay in you tray

Does this happen in the classroom? Now think as an adult in your workplace:

• Do you talk to your colleagues?
• Do you tap your pen or chew it?
• Do you go to the toilet when you need to or do you ask permission?
• Do you make a drink when you fancy one at break and bring it to your desk?

We would like to clarify the purpose of comfort toys and transition objects. They serve an important purpose. They bring comfort to a child who is struggling by providing a sense of familiarity and self soothing.

This is far better than using other soothing techniques that may actually cause harm, such as self harm.

We have noticed in our group sessions in schools that some terminology is being incorrectly used. For example, children will often use anxiety to describe the feeling of worry.

Anxiety is a persistent and an uncontrollable feeling in response to stress or fear. Worry is short lived and often a response to a specific threat or problem.

It’s important that children are able to identify and label their feelings so they know how to respond or how to get help.

We have seen and heard some miss information that is being said in terms of mental health.

Firstly we would like everyone to know that we all have mental health in the same ways we have physical health. There will always be a small population of people who require more specialist support, the same way some do with their physical health.

It’s nearly the weekend… hurrah 🥳 As we’ve been discussing feeling overwhelmed this week, we invite you this weekend (if possible) to have some no plan, just be time. When for example, did you last go out for a walk around a green space as a family?

How can you tell when your child is overwhelmed? They will express this in their behaviour. Some behaviour changes may include:

• Anger outbursts
• Withdrawal or being quieter than usual
• Crying
• Poor sleep
• Refusal to do things such as attend school
• Changes to appetite
• Seeking more reassurance than usual
• Regression such struggling to separate from parent/carer

Support children by validating how they feel, provide reassurance and comfort through physical touch and when possible provide a calm space. This may be a different room or outside space.

You may seen in our stories yesterday that we spoke about feeling overwhelmed. There is a lot going on in the world right now and life may also feel very busy. So if you are feeling this way do something simple to rebalance your central nervous system and protect your peace, however this may look.

We’ve added some suggestions in the photos:

1. Being out in nature
2. Reading
3. Arts and crafts
4. Enjoying your favourite drink
5. Doing nothing and just relaxing at home.

Did you know that school summer holidays were introduced in the late 19th Century. It is often thought this was due to supporting agricultural demands such as, harvesting. However, it was actually more to do with reducing overcrowding in hot cities and to provide educators with a break.

Up until the 1970s there would have been one parent/care giver at home. This enabled them to complete the school run with ease and provide child care during the school holidays.

However, in today’s society most parents/carers work hours that are beyond the school day and have far less annual leave entitlement. Do you agree with us that perhaps the school system is due for a change?

Two post in one day, can you tell this is a subject we are passionate about 😁

The quote in the imagine is taken from, the white paper, Every Child Achieving and Thriving.

In order for children to thrive we truly believe that mental health education needs to be part of the national curriculum. If children are able to recognise and regulate their feelings it will enable them to be more resilient to the demands of the outside world and thus achieve their ambitions and aspirations.

One day we hope our award winning programme My Feelings and Me will be available for all children.

The quote in the image is taken from the white paper, Every Child Achieving and Thriving.

We hope this means that the National Curriculum will be more inclusive and recognise what is already known about the brain. That we all learn differently and each offer different skills. For example, creativity to be nurtured as much as mathematics, to ensure that designers continue to create. After all most of what we use in everyday life was designed by a creative mind.

You have probably already heard the news about the SEND white paper, Every Child Achieving and Thriving.

We can acknowledge that it might be quite emotive for some. Whilst we welcome a focus on the need for changes to SEND support, we are apprehensive about how this will be implemented.

We will be sharing some more information on the paper in our stories.

Schools are frequently criticised for how they handle and respond to children’s needs. With this in mind, teachers are still human. They have chosen this career to support the next generation. However, in the current climate they are under a great deal of pressure to reach unrealistic targets with very limited resources.

We just wanted to highlight the amazing work they are doing. We can appreciate yesterday’s announcement may have caused some uncertainty.
