When everything feels overwhelming, it’s often because our mind is trying to accomplish everything at once.

This staircase can feel impossible when we look at it all. But if we bring our focus back to what is right in front of us this is often much more manageable

The way we speak to ourselves matters more than we realise.

Our minds are always listening. When we tell ourselves, “I can’t do this,” the body often hears threat, failure, and pressure. It tightens. It doubts. It criticises.

But when we gently shift the message to, “I’ll give it my best,” something changes. The nervous system softens. There’s space for effort without shame. For growth without fear.

The situation may be the same but the tone we use internally can turn it into either a harsh critic or a compassionate coach.

Your emotional wellbeing isn’t just about thoughts
 it’s also about chemistry.

Inside your body, oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin and endorphins quietly influence how safe, motivated, calm and connected you feel. When these are low, everything can feel heavier and more overwhelming, even if nothing obvious has changed.

The encouraging part is that gentle daily choices can help
a walk outside, a meaningful conversation, movement, music, rest, creativity
small actions can change how you feel.

So if today feels hard, try not to judge yourself, instead ask “what might my mind and body need right now?”

From a counselling perspective, one of the hardest shifts is moving from self-blame to self-compassion.

When we’ve been hurt, it’s natural to question ourselves and replay events over and over. But growth begins when we gently remind ourselves that someone else’s behaviour is a reflection of them not a measure of our value.

Healing is choosing to step out of the cycle of questioning your worth and stepping into protecting your yourself instead.
