Yoga for Special Needs

Yoga for Special Needs Specialising in Yoga for babies, children and adults with Disabilities, Limitations and Special Needs Special-needs adults may also benefit from yoga.

Among other benefits, Yoga for Special Needs:

• Promotes movement and develops focus.
• More body control, strength, balance, posture and stamina.
• Limitations more easily accepted and often a way to work through them.
• Digestion can be improved.
• Can reduce pain in limbs.
• Helps with breathing.
• Promotes confidence and a positive outlook. A Typical Yoga Session

I help the child to move on the mat where I support them in my arms, gently manipulating their arms and legs to stretch out and relax. Fully supporting the child, I encourage them to use their own muscles in the positions for a few seconds. The yoga breathing techniques help to calm children who have anxiety issues and some can learn to use these methods to help calm themselves, allowing them to be more relaxed, coordinated and able to follow directions better. Yoga is a way to introduce children to a method of stretching, breathing, body awareness and posture development using an approach that they may not have experienced before. Many children may have been doing some form of standard physical, occupational and/or speech therapies most of their lives and find the holistic system of yoga complementary, motivating, strengthening and calming. Yoga offers something new to those with special-needs and it allows them to be able do some of the things that able-bodied people can, hugely increasing confidence and lessening frustration. When they become familiar with the yoga poses, some can prompt themselves to put yoga the methods into practice to help control themselves when suffering anxiety, frustration or fatigue. I travel to the client’s home to make yoga more accessible, personal and confidential. About me

I am a fully qualified Yoga teacher, stress management consultant and massage therapist, with over 20 years’ experience, both in the UK and abroad. I am a qualified teacher of Integral Yoga, a registered Yoga training school in the UK through the Independent Yoga Network. Naturally, I am fully insured and DBS checked. I am specially trained for people with limitations, disabilities and mental health issues, having furthered my training at ‘The Special Yoga Centre’ in London. Special Yoga for Special Children

This style of yoga provides an adaptive programme to enhance harmoniously the natural development of children with special needs. It is gentle and therapeutic – safe for babies and children with a range of developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism and others, also providing an effective treatment for children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, ADHD and Learning Disabilities. This unique therapeutic yoga method, with its stretching, breathing and singing, helps promote the child's focus and helps them to feel more connected to and comfortable with their bodies, as well as bringing a sense of wellbeing; it has been proven to improve the lives of children with special needs and provide considerable support for their families and carers. Please watch this 8 minute video link https://youtu.be/oYeInOQPNUI which will give an insight into the wonderful work accomplished at the Special Yoga Centre in London, and the therapeutic yoga available through teachers, like myself, who have furthered our specialist training there. In my 1:1 sessions, we practice the discipline of yoga postures, breathing techniques and sound therapies which provide children with the tools for coping with anxiety and any other difficult emotions they may feel.

Yoga helps the child to develop emotional regulation, sensory integration and self-control, improves motor function, balance, coordination, and strength, all whilst having fun!

If you have a child with special needs, you are always looking for ways to help them grow and develop.

You want them to be able to live their best life possible. With that in mind, have you considered yoga? Yoga has many benefits for children, including those with special needs.

Yoga is an ancient practice that combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. Yoga aims to improve the overall health of the individual practising it.

When it comes to children, yoga can help with Gross Motor Skills, Fine Motor Skills, Sensory Processing, Social & Emotional Development, and Behaviour Management.

💪Gross Motor Skills: Yoga requires the use of large muscle groups which helps children improve their gross motor skills. Things like balancing, coordination, and spatial awareness are all improved through yoga practice.

✏️Fine Motor Skills: Small muscle groups are needed for activities such as writing and tying shoes. Because yoga requires the use of small muscle groups, it helps children improve their fine motor skills. A child who practices yoga will see an improvement in things like their ability to button shirts and hold a pencil correctly.

🧘‍♀️Sensory Processing: For children with sensory processing issues, yoga can be a great way to help them regulate their sensory input. Activities like deep breathing and certain yoga poses can help children calm down and feel more in control.

😊Social & Emotional Development: One of the most important things that yoga teaches children is how to regulate their emotions. Through things like breathwork and meditation, children learn how to calm themselves down when they are feeling upset or frustrated. They also learn how to be more present at the moment which can help reduce anxiety and stress.

🥰Behaviour Management: One of the most valuable things that yoga teaches children is self-control and patience. These are essential skills for managing behaviour issues both inside and outside of the classroom setting. Children who practice yoga regularly will find that they are better able to control their impulses.
There are so many benefits that come from practicing yoga, especially for children with special needs. If you have a child with special needs, I encourage you to give yoga a try! It just might be exactly what they need to help them grow and thrive!

Yoga is often thought of as a way to relax and de-stress. But what many people don't know is that yoga also offers significant health benefits.

🍃 Yoga can help improve your heart health
🍃 Yoga can ease back pain
🍃Yoga can boost your immune system

It's never too late to start practicing yoga, and enjoy these health benefits, but it's even better if you start in childhood. Introduce your kids to yoga, especially if you have a special needs child, and watch them take advantage of all the health benefits yoga will provide.
