The perfect Christmas present- book a wine tasting tour - at the wonderful Woodchester Valley Vineyard
I did the Vineyard Tour & Wine Tasting with grazing lunch
and it is a great way to explore the best of local
Cotswolds with a vineyard tour and local lunch. It was a great experience, even in the pouring rain.
We started off with a glass of Bacchus and an introduction to the vineyard, followed by a walk through the Woodchester site learning about growing in Great Britain and the lifecycle of the vines, a tour of the winery, with detail of the winemaking process. Followed by a tasting of some of the current wines, finishing off with a locally sourced picnic lunch hamper and a glass of wine.
It was a throughly enjoyable experience, obviously the wines and local produce are delicious, but I also learned so much about the local history and wine making.
The Culver Hill wine is special to me as I live on Culver Hill, where Fiona Shiner planted her vines in 2007. I now look out over the Woodchester vineyards from my bedroom window, not a bad view to wake up too.
My favourite wine is Orpheus Bacchus, named after Orpheus mosaic, buried in Woodchester, (the second largest of its kind in Europe and one of the most intricate. It dates to c. AD 325). I was lucky enough to see it when it was uncovered, as a child.
I knew the area was famous for its cloth, but didn’t know the Stroudwater area was famous for its dyeing; especially the scarlet that was used for military uniforms.. The Tenderhook wine is named after the tenterhooks that the cloth would be hung out to dry on the hillside.
There are so many more delicious wines and lots of different wine experiences to choose from, in a way, it’s a shame I live so close as I would love to stay in the guest accommodation, it gorgeous.
