ARGH! What is Emotional Dysregulation?!😡

Having emotions is a normal part of being human. Feeling sad, angry, frustrated, confused, worried; all normal. Some children however, will experience emotional responses that do not appear to fall within the expected range of emotions for the situation. This is known as ‘Emotional Dysregulation’, and can be a really tricky aspect of ADHD and ASD. This can look like;

-> Frequent tantrums (hitting, screaming, shouting, breaking/throwing things, swearing)

-> Struggling to make decisions

-> Impulsivity

-> Avoiding difficult conversations

Firstly, if you’re a parent with an emotionally dysregulated child, I see you. It’s really tough, and you’re doing great 💓 It can be exhausting and can leave us feeling stressed and frustrated.

It’s important that we provide children with the tools to be able to regulate their emotions effectively - the earlier the better! So, something to try; ✍🏼

The ABCs of Emotional Regulation*

A - Adjust: Hold your shoulders to your ears for 5 seconds, then let them fall back towards your torso

B - Breathe: Take 5 deep breaths, in through the nose, out through the mouth

C - Communicate. The child can be encouraged to very simply communicate how they are feeling using ‘I am feeling X, because of X. I need X’. - This can take time to learn.

These steps may seem simple, but they can be transformative. Give it a go yourself. It may be helpful come that morning rush hour…

*Top tips;
-> Do not introduce this practice when the child is already dysregulated - they most likely won’t have the capacity to accept and understand.

-> Make the learning fun! Positively introduce the idea to them as something you’re both/all going to try!

-> Sometimes a child might want a hug, sometimes they might not. Don’t force a hug onto a child even if that works for you.

-> Something really cool - if you have an ice pack, suggest the child holds it to their left cheek. This can be incredibly helpful to help calm and relax the child (or you).

Remember, our goal is to not eradicate emotions and reactions. They are normal and we mustn’t shy away from them. Instead, we must focus on how we can safely and effectively return back to a regulated space.

And trust me, less is more when a child is dysregulated. Your job is not to fix, it’s to hold the space. You’ve got this 💓💪🏽💓

"Quite simply, Scarlet coming into our lives was a game changer."

Another lovely testimonial. It's so important to be a team; coach, child and parent(s)/guardians - when we work together we can achieve amazing things.

"When we first met her our lives were in turmoil dealing with the day to day traumatic reality of living with our teenage daughter, her depression, anxiety, ADHD and self harm.

Scarlet’s ability to relate to, support, nurture and provide effective tools for self help were absolutely spot on. She was always approachable and communicated well.

Now that our daughter is well again and thriving we cannot thank her enough for her professionalism and kindness. We would recommend her in a heartbeat and knowing that she is only a WhatsApp message away is a constant reassurance for us all."

My 'Why' ❤
-
“When my parents suggested meeting with Scarlet after multiple therapists and psychiatrists when I was going through a period of depression, anxiety, self harming and a new ADHD diagnosis, I was very sceptical as I found it very hard to talk to professionals about my mental health. But from the first time I met with Scarlet I knew it was different. I immediately felt so comfortable with her and felt she made such an effort to get to know me straight away and help me understand my diagnosis and how it affected me, as well how to adjust to life with ADHD and how to help myself and my family know how my brain works. Never have I found it easier talking to someone about how I feel, and the plans we made about how I could slowly turn my life around were challenging, but I always felt so supported and comfortable with her. Not only is she kind, she’s also fun and makes talking about difficult things easy and natural. I would not be where I am today, 4 months clean on self harm enjoying life again, and a good understanding on how to cope and live with ADHD, if it wasn’t for her constant belief in me and the positive effect she brought on my life."

What is Coaching?
-
"Imagine yourself lost in a wood. A consultant will tell you the steps to get out of that wood and a therapist will help you work out why you're there. A coach will climb the tree with you, shine a light on your options, and be your support in choosing the best one for you."

Put simply, coaching is a process of personal development which helps people to reach specific goals. These goals can vary from child to child, from ‘achieve academic success’, to ‘increase my self-esteem’.

I identify the main areas of concern for you and your child to create an individualised, flexible plan, which can be adapted and tailored continuously. Coaching can be for one month, or a year, or indefinitely, it’s completely down to you!

I can coach fully online via Zoom, or I can travel to your home for in person sessions where possible. You are able to choose a combination of online or in person if you wish - which ever suits you best!

Who Am I?
-
Hi there! My name is Scarlet and I'm an ADHD and Mental Health Coach for young people aged 6-22 - here's a little about me, and how I got into this amazing job!

Through my childhood and adolescence, I dealt with a lot of mental health issues; anxiety, depression and eating disorders, which heavily affected my schooling, relationships, and self-esteem. I really struggled to cope with what I was feeling and felt completely alone while doing so.

I didn’t understand what was going on in my mind and body, and desperately wanted support. This confusion led to a determination to investigate my brain and mind – I love a puzzle, and this was certainly a tricky one.

I quickly became fascinated by the human existence; how our brains work, why we feel the way we feel, and the power we have to change our way of thinking.

I went on to gain a BSc in Psychology - where I focused on child development; their mental health and developmental difficulties; ADHD, ASD, anxiety, and depression - and an MA in Music Theatre.

After my studies, I gained experience working in schools as a teaching assistant, SEN 1:1 tutor, and music teacher. Here, I was exposed to the limitations of the system when supporting a child who may just need that little extra guidance and patience, and how this can make life a battle for children and parents alike.

Simultaneously, I got diagnosed with ADHD, and, finally, everything made sense. I was relieved to have been given the explanation that I had been searching for, for years, but felt wholly let down by a world that could/did not help me when I needed it. I then gained insight into how little support and guidance there is for people with such a diagnosis, even as an adult. This was the final push I needed…

My degree in Psychology has given me a fantastic base understanding of cognition, behaviour, and the brain, while my MA in Acting and training as a Role Play Actor allows me to bring that knowledge to life in a practical way. I made it my mission to be there for children and young people like me who struggled with their brains, their thoughts, their feelings, and so, I invested in training to gain accreditation, and became a Coach.
