Habits can start at anytime and old habits can, after years of breaking, return when becoming stressed. This time of year, can create a lot of stressful and anxious feelings and finding comfort in doing something, even though it is not healthy, can suddenly appear without warning.
Stress and anxiety can often be related to change or the lack of feeling the power to control things out of our authority. So, when those old habits come back, bringing with them old familiar and comfortable feelings they can also bring the illusion of empowerment as well.
Breaking habits completely so they do not return can be done with professional help, but another way is to keep very grounded through self-awareness.
Keeping the mind present, through regular practices of mindfulness and meditation, can prevent bad routines developing or returning because they naturally relieve mental and physical stress and anxiety.
The mental power of living each moment can also help the enjoyment and fulfillment of life and that includes those busier times like Christmas.
Animals can develop habits too, just like this horse in the photo, gnawing on the gate!
