Habits can start at anytime and old habits can, after years of breaking, return when becoming stressed. This time of year, can create a lot of stressful and anxious feelings and finding comfort in doing something, even though it is not healthy, can suddenly appear without warning.

Stress and anxiety can often be related to change or the lack of feeling the power to control things out of our authority. So, when those old habits come back, bringing with them old familiar and comfortable feelings they can also bring the illusion of empowerment as well.

Breaking habits completely so they do not return can be done with professional help, but another way is to keep very grounded through self-awareness.
Keeping the mind present, through regular practices of mindfulness and meditation, can prevent bad routines developing or returning because they naturally relieve mental and physical stress and anxiety.
The mental power of living each moment can also help the enjoyment and fulfillment of life and that includes those busier times like Christmas.

Animals can develop habits too, just like this horse in the photo, gnawing on the gate!

It is a way of communicating without the need to say anything.
A smile can say 'I am okay' to those we know, and it can also say 'Hello' to those we don't.

There are times when things get super busy, the approach to Christmas is one of these, and we all know how overwhelming and tense that can feel.

Getting into good, simple, and regular mindful routines that take only 5-10 minutes can help.
Like this easy one, taking short breaks throughout the day to sit still and take a couple of deeper breaths in and out.

These mind rests can be beneficial when things start to get busy and provide a natural and simple ‘go to’ when it feels the pressure is on.
When mindfulness becomes a part of everyday life it is like pressing a reset button which can stop thoughts racing ahead of time, as well as release stress and tension from the body.

And if done just before bed it can, and has been proven to, improve the quality of sleep.

It can be very hard to get the motivation to do anything much this time of year with the days shorter and the cold weather arriving. But if you take a look outside, see how Mother Nature is taking things slower by conserving energy as much as possible. Perhaps this is a sign that you need to do the same.

‘Take your time there is no need to rush around, have some time for reflection and be ready to let go of the things that have served you. Having a lazy nothing day spent in your PJ’s really can be the tonic needed this time of year, a head of the Christmas time rush.

Being cosied up with nowhere important to be, can have a positive effect on mind space. Because as well as bringing clarity to the present state of mind it can also make the whole thinking process calmer and more relaxed.

Taking a day out and not actually going out or doing much, can be mentally as beneficial as taking a week’s holiday. But unlike going away, this kind of mental break involves no travelling and best of all is completely free of charge.

We sometimes can feel lost, not really knowing who we are supposed to be and that can be hard to live with day to day.

In todays world there is great pressure for everyone to be successful often with the added creation of a persona they are not. More so then ever it feels that people are becoming further away from their true self.

Life is not about becoming the something you are not; it is about being the something you are.

Sometimes life can become dull and boring, leading some to look elsewhere for sparkle and stimulation. But changing outside things may not always be the answer, and the satisfaction from doing so will only ever be short lived.

Life can happen in full-on bursts and then slow down, the same happens in the seasons of the natural world around us. So, when things do go quieter it can just mean that we need to take some time away from the everyday stuff to indulge in complete nothingness.

Finding our own safe place, like curled up on the sofa, lying in bed or even being outside in the open air just watching the world go by, can have an amazing restorative effect.
Having anything from an hour or two to even a day or two, spent in solitude and contemplation where time as a physical thing seems not to exist, not only can restore the all-round health and well-being of mind and body, but also have us ready for the next round of life.
And what we thought had become dull and boring in either ourselves or our lives, with a refreshed outlook, can once again become shinier and more interesting.

Keeping it all together in one frame at a time like viewing a film, scene by scene, not rushing to the end so quickly that every part in between is a blur. In other words, keep present so that every part can be worked through so that the end makes more meaningful sense.

The story starts 10 years ago this month. After qualifying in November 2009 I set up H.J.B Hypnotherapy in April 2010 and began seeing my first clients. The past 10 years have been quite a journey for me as a therapist not knowing at the beginning the learning and personal growth I would do through helping others. Taking this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to all my clients past and present for without you I would not still be here ten years on. Here’s to the next decade!
