Today, one of my students asked how to stay positive when there is so much fear and negativity on the news and in the world in general. My initial response was to say keep your energy high. Do this by cutting out the time you spend watching the news, having negative conversations, and replacing them with happy music, by watching something funny on TV etc.
I have since thought more and suggest that if you reinforce your body's positive energy with meditation, you can give your energy even more of a boost with just 10 or 15 minutes a day, and it costs nothing.
We often think meditation is about “clearing the mind” — but it’s so much more than that.
Meditation is a reset button for your nervous system, because:
- It lowers stress
- It improves focus
- It helps you respond instead of reacting
With consistent practice, meditation can:
• Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
• Improve sleep quality
• Increase emotional resilience
• Strengthen self-awareness
• Support better decision-making
• Even lower blood pressure
You may well say, ‘Isn’t that enough?’ But one of the most powerful benefits is that you start building a different relationship with your thoughts.
Instead of being pulled into every worry, fear, or distraction, you learn to observe them. And in that space between thought and reaction — that’s where peace lives.
Just 5–10 minutes a day can begin to rewire how you experience your life. Not because your life changes overnight. But because you do. I have found that if I meditate in the morning, then by the end of the day, I have a real sense of achievement and satisfaction. If I forget, then by the end of the day, I feel like I have just muddled through and have not really achieved anything.
Stillness isn’t doing nothing. It’s training your mind to work for you instead of against you.
Have you meditated today?
