Keeping your equine friend happy throughout the winter

Simple but regular work is the key to Keeping your horse supple and maintaining mobility throughout the colder season.

Movement is key to helping mobility and protecting joints.

Try some in hand walking or long reining - add in some poles to get them lifting through their back and core. Create a short mobilisation/massage routine that can be done in the stable.

Sessions don't need to be long (10 -15mins) or dont even need to be outdoors.

Keeping your horse feeling their best

Routine maintenance massage visits at regular intervals throughout the year ensures your horse feels their best and performs to their best ability.

Even when no issues are evident, a maintenance session is useful to identify and work on any tension or restrictions that may be affecting the horses posture/balance and risk of injury.

Does your horse have tension in their shoulders? Try these to help keep your horse more comfortable in this cold and wet weather.

🐴use your fingertips to lightly move the skin over the tissue underneath. Move fingers all over the surface of the scapula (shoulder bone). Make sure to keep pressure light. Move fingers back and forth 10 -15 times before moving on.

🐴triceps - make a claw and draw lines down in the muscle just behind the scapula (shoulder bone) and down to the elbow. Pressure should be light. Do this 10 -15 times

🐴front leg - jostle - pick up leg as if picking out hoof. Support at fetlock and knee (carpels) and lightly jiggle the lime
Aim for a gentle movement. Do this for up to 20 seconds on both fronts. Dont force the movement.

All of these can be added into your daily grooming routine.
