Now the days are getting shorter, the weather is unpredictable and there seems to be mud everywhere you turn, you might be wondering how to keep your horse supple, fit and engaged over winter.
With some planning and preparation winter can be an ideal time to build fitness, flexibility, suppleness and find new ways to connect and enjoy time with your equine friend.
❄️hacking under saddle, when time allows, is a great way to keep your horse not only fit but mentally stimulated. Aim for mid morning to early afternoon to avoid the darkness creeping in and make sure you are aware of the weather and ground conditions. Dont forget the hi viz and lights for both yourself and your horse (light up like a Christmas tree). Be sure you let someone know where you are hacking and when you are due back.
❄️long reining hacks are brilliant during winter and an excellent alternative to ridden work. Long reining will help build strength and suppleness, all while keeping your horse mentally stimulated. A big bonus is you will get some steps in at the same time - win, win 👣👣
❄️lunging is another good way to keep your horse moving when the weather is against you. Dont be afraid to move about with your horse - you dont need to stick to 20 mtr circles.
❄️add some poles - either ridden, in hand or on the lunge. You dont need to lay out a specific pattern or distance. Just something for your horse to step over. Add some risers at one end (or both) to make your horse step higher.
