Highway Code Safety 🚦
As Sunderland continues to grow, connect and transform, making our streets safer for everyone is very important.
Whether you’re travelling through the city centre, along Riverside Sunderland, or moving between our communities, simple Highway Code rules play a vital role in keeping people safe as they walk, wheel, cycle and drive.
Follow the rules below, look out for each other, and let’s make our city’s streets safer for everyone.
1. Always stop for people at zebra crossings on cycle tracks .
🤚🏻 Whether you’re cycling or driving, the rule is simple.
2. Cyclists must always stop at red lights.
🛑 Red means stop - for everyone.
Cyclists must always stop at red lights, just like any other road user.
3. Always let cyclists pass before you turn
🚲 Turning left or right?
Make sure you let cyclists pass before you turn.
4. Always let people cross before you turn
🚶♀️🚗 Turning at a junction?
You must let people cross before you turn - whether they’re walking, wheeling, or pushing a pram.
5. You must stop for people on zebra and parallel crossings
🖤⚪ When someone steps onto a zebra or parallel crossing, you must stop - whether you’re behind the wheel or on a bike.
These crossings give people priority.
Stopping gives them safety.
