Working and struggling after an unexpected bill or expense?

You’re not alone and help may be available from our Household Support Fund.

If you qualify, you’ll receive digital vouchers to help towards your food and energy bills.

The fund is open to all Sunderland residents - whether you’re working, receiving benefits, not receiving benefits, a single-person household, a family, or a pensioner. Support is awarded only if you meet the eligibility criteria.

A single mam with two children, working two jobs and not receiving any means tested benefits, successfully applied for support from us.
After being hit with an unexpected bill, she was worried she would have to rely on credit just to get by. The Household Support Fund awarded her £260 to help with food and fuel costs.
She said: “It was such a relief - I didn’t know how I was going to manage.”

Please note:
• Awards are based on the information and evidence you provide
• Support isn’t guaranteed and isn’t a legal entitlement
• Help can only be given while funding is available

This funding ends on 31 March 2026. If you’re struggling, don’t wait to apply.

Find out if you’re eligible and apply today at https://orlo.uk/9VwLs

We’ve welcomed the positive findings of the Local Government Association’s Corporate Peer Challenge

A team of local government leaders visited Sunderland last year to carry out a Corporate Peer Challenge which provides robust, strategic and credible challenge and support to councils through the use of member and officer peers. Their independent review praises our strong leadership, ambitious long term vision and the major regeneration happening across our city.

They also highlighted our high performing services, including Outstanding children’s services and Good adult social care, as well as our role as a trusted regional partner and the impact of attracting significant investment through projects like Riverside Sunderland.

The report includes helpful recommendations, and we’re already working on an action plan to keep improving. We’ll publish this by April, with a progress review later this year.

Please be aware of the dangers of small magnets and toy mini bead magnets, as they can be deadly if swallowed.

Office for Product Safety and Standards advises parents and carers to keep products that contain high powered magnets away from young children, and to act fast to get immediate medical treatment if it’s believed a magnet has been swallowed.

A heart-breaking case was recently reported where a 4 year old boy died in England after swallowing a small fridge magnet. The 1cm magnet attracted to a piece of metal he was believed to have swallowed earlier, tearing a hole in his bowel and causing fatal sepsis. Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident.

A 2025 study found that around 300 UK children were admitted to A&E in a single year after swallowing magnets - with 1 in 10 needing life saving surgery. The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued a safety alert in 2021 warning families about the risks of small, strong magnets - but cases continue.

Five magnet safety tips for families:
➡️ Avoid small, loose magnets if you have young children.
➡️ Only buy magnets from reputable retailers or familiar brands.
➡️ Be cautious when buying from overseas sellers on online marketplaces - safety standards may not apply.
➡️ Teach older children never to put magnets in their mouths.
➡️ If you think your child has swallowed magnets, go straight to A&E or call 999. Do not wait for symptoms.
