Ongoing staff training is not optional for NPLQ lifeguards. It is a requirement.

To maintain an RLSS NPLQ qualification, lifeguards must continue to train, refresh core skills, and keep up to date with current industry standards. Skills fade if they are not used, and lifesaving is not something you wing on the day.

At SAM - Successful First Aid Management, we regularly deliver ongoing NPLQ staff training sessions for lifeguards who want to stay compliant, confident, and ready to respond when it counts. These sessions cover essential lifesaving skills, scenario work, and updates aligned with RLSS expectations.

Not every pool operates with a lifeguard on poolside, and in some settings that can be entirely appropriate, as long as it is backed up by a full, written risk assessment and clear normal operating procedures.

Where swimming takes place without a lifeguard, your staff still need the skills and confidence to deal with an emergency quickly and effectively. The RLSS Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award (SPERA)

is designed for exactly that, giving staff practical training in how to respond, work as a team, and manage an incident until emergency services arrive.

At Successful First Aid Management, we deliver SPERA courses on-site at your venue, so your team trains in the environment they actually work in. If you run or manage a pool at a school, hotel, gym, therapy setting, holiday park, private facility, or any other site where a lifeguard is not part of the day-to-day operation, we can help you get the right training in place.
