✨ Tomorrow and Sunday, 6 and 7 December, we’ll gather for our annual Light up a Life services, here at the Hospice, for a special evening of music, remembrance, and reflection. ✨

Gates open at 5.15pm and the service begins at 6.15pm.

Spaces are free but limited, so please do book if you’re planning to join us. We would love to see you there.

Thank you for a magical Christmas Market! 🎅✨

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us! We had such a fantastic time celebrating with you all. The day was made extra special with a visit from Santa in his grotto and a surprise drop-in from the fire brigade! 🎅🚒

And of course, a massive thank you to our amazing stallholders for bringing so much sparkle and spirit to the event💜

Did you see us on Channel 5 News last week?

The programme explored the ongoing funding challenges facing St Raphael’s and the wider hospice sector, and included powerful words from Georgina, who generously shared her family’s experience of the care we provided to her son, Alastair.

Georgina said,
“Death became peaceful, which meant that we were able to leave here knowing that everything that could possibly be done for him was done, and that he was free from pain and at peace.”

To mark , we're taking this opportunity to open up conversations about loss and the many ways it touches our lives.

Grief is a natural part of who we are as humans, yet many find it difficult to talk about. Feelings of loss can manifest with different symptoms. As we are all unique, our experience of grief will be too.

To offer support during this week, our Counselling Team has put together some gentle advice on caring for both mind and body while navigating bereavement. We hope these suggestions provide some comfort. You can find these suggestions on our website homepage.

Stark new figures from Hospice UK show 380 hospice beds are now out of use across England - a 25% rise in just one year. This growing crisis has been highlighted nationally, including on BBC Breakfast.

St Raphael's Joint CEO and Clinical Director Becca Trower responded:

"Sadly it is no surprise that the number of empty beds is continuing to rise across England as hospices struggle to keep their beds open while demand soars.”

Only one month to go until our Santa Dash! 🎅

To mark the countdown, our amazing supporter Claire told us what the event means to her. Claire first took part in the Santa Dash with her colleagues, and most recently ran with her best friend and their daughters.

“End of life care and support for families is so important, and making that experience better for people is what makes me passionate about supporting St Raphael's." Claire says.

She also shared why the event is such a highlight:

“We make an event of it! Everyone’s there to support the charity, it’s such a fun day and it really brings in the festive spirit.”

We're delighted to share that St Raphael's appeared on BBC Newsnight for the second evening in a row last night! 💜

The reaction to Wednesday’s broadcast was so powerful that the programme returned to the topic of hospice funding last night, featuring the heartfelt story of our community patient, Bill. The Newsnight programme was also mentioned in the House of Commons yesterday, an important step closer to improving funding for the sector.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome the BBC Newsnight team to St Raphael’s Hospice to film a feature about our care. The crew spent time with our patients, families, and staff, capturing the warmth, compassion, and dedication that define life at the Hospice.

The feature also explores the financial pressures currently facing hospices across the UK, an important conversation that needs to be heard.
