This morning we attended Bretby Crematorium to bid farewell to Ruth. A much loved wife, mum, sister and friend to many.

As we approached we were greeted with red, Ruth’s favourite colour. With the love for travel, family and everything in life, beautiful stories were delivered to those attending by Nick the celebrant, which raised a giggle and a few tears.

Red roses were entwined in a stunning floral tribute cross, created by Katie at Sweetpeas Florist.

May you be at peace Ruth, our thoughts are with Mick, Steve and Faye and the rest of Ruth’s family and friends 🥀❤️🪽

Today we met with a family to arrange a private cremation, often referred to as a direct cremation. They were honouring their dad’s wishes, but understandably found it difficult to come to terms with the lack of closure that a traditional service can bring.

We spoke about ways to celebrate his life after the cremation, maybe through a memorial service or a meaningful gathering in a place special to them.

With our private cremations, the smallest details matter, we will ensure his favourite song will play as he enters the chapel and during his final journey, just as he wished.
It’s a simple request, but one that means so much to fulfil.

There is absolutely a place for direct cremations, and many national providers offer a no-fuss service.
However, families often don’t realise the differences when choosing a local independent funeral director.

Here’s a simple comparison to help:

**Using a Local Independent Funeral Director**

✔ Lower cost, simple arrangements
✔ Quick and straightforward process completed
in a timely manner.
✔ Your loved one stays close to home before the
cremation
✔ Care provided by a familiar, dedicated local
team
✔ Personal wishes honoured (clothing, perfume,
keepsakes, letters)
✔ Use of a chapel of rest to say final farewells
✔ Flexibility with routes, music, and meaningful details
✔ Private, dignified transport (not alongside
others)
✔ Individual handover at the crematorium with
respect and ceremony
✔ Opportunity for guidance, support, and
aftercare
✔ Supporting a local family-run business

**Using a Low-Cost Nationwide Provider (TV/Online)**

✔ Lower cost, simple arrangements
✔ Quick and straightforward process
✖ Limited personalisation
✖ Less involvement or visibility for families
✖ Loved one will be cared for outside the local
area
✖ Shared or scheduled cremations
✖ Out of area crematorium
✖ Less opportunity for meaningful moments or
rituals

Every family is different, and every farewell should reflect that.
One type of funeral does not suit everyone and that’s okay.

If you’re unsure, please speak to your local independent funeral directors.

We are here to guide and support you every step of the way 🤍

Mondays aren’t always about rushing into a new week… sometimes they’re about slowing down and really listening.

Today I spent time with a family, talking through the final arrangements for their ‘mam’. These conversations are never easy, but making sure her beliefs and traditions are respected in every detail truly matters.

It’s about getting it right for them, and for her.

I also lit a gorgeous candle gifted to me by a lovely lady and friend after taking care of her beloved Son, Ricky 💚 thank you Cathy, it’s beautiful.

This candle will now be lit on each instruction, in honour and remembrance. a quiet moment to reflect on the lives entrusted to my care.

I’m always grateful to the families who trust me with their loved ones, it’s something I carry with a lot of care and respect. 🤍

Today we had the privilege of supporting the family and friends of Peter Dicken, fondly known as Pete, at York Road Methodist Church.

The church was full as loved ones gathered to say goodbye. Pete’s coffin and hearse were adorned with bright, colourful flowers, a beautiful reflection of his love for flowers and his garden. Our floral tributes were wonderfully created by Katie Sweetpeas.

Following the service, a committal took place at York Road Cemetery, led by Rev Manoa, providing a thoughtful and fitting farewell.

Pete was a keen snooker and pool player, and this was reflected in his bespoke, handmade quality-finish coffin featuring a snooker silhouette from J C Walwyn & Sons, along with a matching keepsake heart for his wife, Helen.

It was only fitting that family and friends later gathered at Potter’s snooker and pool hall to share memories and celebrate Pete’s life together.

Our thoughts are with Helen and all of Pete’s family and friends this evening.

Today we hold space for many emotions.

Mother’s Day can be a time of love, gratitude and celebration, but it can also be a day of quiet reflection and remembrance.

Today we think of those who are missing their mums,
those who carry the love of a child no longer here,
those who never had the chance to hold their babies in their arms,
and anyone for whom today feels a little heavier.

May the memories you hold bring comfort,
and may you feel surrounded by love and understanding today.

And to those celebrating with their mums, or being celebrated themselves, we wish you a gentle and happy Mother’s Day.

Holding you all in our thoughts today and always. 🤍

I just wanted to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has sent cards, kind messages and the beautiful gifts over the past few days.

It always humbles me that, even while going through such a difficult time, people still find the kindness and thoughtfulness to think of me. Your generosity and words truly mean more than I can properly express.

One of the lovely gifts now has pride of place in the office and will always remind me of the family I had the privilege to support and the kindness shown during such a sad time.

Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and for allowing me to care for your loved one. It is a trust I never take lightly. 🤍

Today on International Women’s Day, I want to take a moment to recognise the incredible women working within the funeral profession.

For generations, this industry was seen as a place for men. Yet today, women across the profession are bringing compassion, strength, professionalism, and a deeply human touch to the families we care for every day.

To my fellow female funeral directors, embalmers, arrangers, celebrants, mortuary staff, and everyone supporting families behind the scenes , your dedication does not go unnoticed. The work we do requires resilience, empathy, and quiet strength, and I’m proud to stand alongside so many remarkable women in this field.

We honour lives, support families through their most difficult moments, and carry out this work with dignity and care.

Today we celebrate the women who came before us, the women working beside us, and the women who will shape the future of our profession.

Happy International Women’s Day 💜

Today we’re reflecting on a very special milestone for Shilvocks Funeral Directors.

As a business we opened just under 18 months ago and just over 5 months ago we opened our doors in Woodville as a small, independent, family-run funeral directors.

We didn’t know exactly what the year ahead would bring, but we hoped we could serve our community with care, compassion and dignity.

Today we’ve reached 901 followers, and we just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who has supported us, recommended us, trusted us, or simply followed our journey. It truly means a lot to our family.

Being part of this community is something we are incredibly proud of. We both live and work here in Woodville, and supporting local families during difficult times is a responsibility we never take lightly.

Thank you for the kindness, encouragement and support.

Here’s to continuing to serve our local community with compassion and care.

Helen and all the Shilvock Family 🤍

A Gentle Space for Final Whispers

In our Forget-Me-Not Chapel, we understand that some goodbyes are spoken quietly, held close to the heart. We’ve introduced Final Whispers, small, discreet cards that allow you to leave a private message with your loved one.

Whether it’s a thank‑you, a memory, or words you didn’t get the chance to say, your message will rest with them in peace and confidentiality.

There is no expectation to use a Final Whisper, simply know that it is there for you, should you feel comfort in writing one. If you choose not to use our Forget-Me-Not-Chapel to say farewell, you are still welcome to write a card that will be placed with your loved ones for their final journey.

A quiet moment. A personal message. A final whisper.
