As we approach World Cancer Day, we wanted to draw your attention to new research on the impact of exercise after cancer treatment.
Exercise is better than drugs at stopping cancer relapse new research shows.
Findings published in Health Club Management magazine reveal that structured exercise after cancer treatment can reduce the risk of cancer returning more effectively than some drug interventions.
Presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the international trial involving 889 colon cancer patients found that those supported with a designed exercise programme and personal trainer had:
37% lower risk of death over eight years
28% lower risk of cancer recurrence
Results achieved with activity equivalent to three to four 45–60 min walks per week
The study underlines that exercise is non-toxic, low cost and highly effective and that the human support element provided by trained professionals can dramatically improve outcomes.
As Health Club Management reports, these findings strengthen calls for exercise and physical activity to be integrated into cancer care pathways and highlight the role that exercise professionals play in long-term recovery and health.
