We've recently delivered another excellent Chemical First Aid training course. This time it was to staff working within the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) in Swansea.

The course focused on the recognition and immediate management of chemical injuries, including real‑world scenarios relevant to laboratory, cleanroom, and research environments.

* 100% of attendees rated the course 9 or 10/10 for teaching quality, instructor knowledge, and overall satisfaction.
* 100% reported increased confidence and understanding of Chemical First Aid.
* 100% reported they would recommend the course to others who work with chemicals.

Feedback highlighted the value of:

* Clear, phase‑based treatment approaches
* Real‑world examples and practical application
* Increased awareness of chemical injury risks (including HF exposure)
* Practical guidance on injury management and SDS interpretation

Thank you to the CISM team for their engagement and professionalism throughout the session. It’s encouraging to see such strong commitment to laboratory safety, preparedness, and staff welfare.

If your own team works with hazardous chemicals and would benefit from practical, evidence‑based Chemical First Aid training, feel free to get in touch with our friendly team.

I wanted to briefly highlight the regulatory context that applies wherever staff may be exposed to hazardous substances.

Under Regulation 12 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), employers must provide employees with “suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training” where work is liable to expose them to substances hazardous to health.

In addition, the COSHH Approved Code of Practice (L5) makes clear that training must be appropriate to the level of risk and the type of work carried out. Where risk assessments identify a foreseeable risk of chemical burns, splashes, or toxic exposure, any training should extend beyond standard First Aid at Work content.

HSE first aid guidance also advises that employers should consider additional training where work involves special hazards, including hazardous chemicals.

In practice, many organisations have strong First Aid at Work provision, and strong with chemical spill training, but they are not as strong in training their staff on what to do if the chemical spills on their staff's skin, in their eyes, or if their staff inhale toxic vapour or gases. Therefore, their chemical-specific emergency response is not always covered in sufficient depth to meet the “suitable and sufficient” threshold under COSHH.

Our Chemical First Aid at Work programme is designed specifically to address this gap and provide documented competence aligned to any identified COSHH risks.

⚠️
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) clearly states:

“Where work involves higher level hazards such as chemicals, or special hazards such as hydrofluoric acid, employers may need to provide additional training for first aiders to deal with resulting injuries.”
