From island to island across the beautiful west coast of Scotland, here's a little peek of a week in the life of Service Manager Clara and her wonderful team of Counsellors and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners!

They've been island hopping visiting local classrooms bringing The Exchange's support to children and families in remote communities.

No matter where you live, every child deserves to be understood, supported, and given the tools to thrive. Rural communities have different challenges to urban, but all children deserve the same wellbeing support.

Thank you to all the schools and families who welcomed Clara on her travels - and to our team for continuing to make a difference, one island at a time 🌊

When a young person struggles to go to school, it can feel confusing and worrying - for them, for parents, and for teachers. But behind every “I can’t” is a story worth understanding 💛

Sometimes it’s anxiety about friendships, pressure to perform, or worries that build quietly over time. What matters most is not forcing attendance, but creating space for conversation, curiosity and compassion.

At The Exchange, we help children and families explore the why - building emotional tools, confidence and connection so school becomes a place they can return to, not retreat from 🌱

Sometimes, all it takes is someone outside the family to listen, understand, and help a child find their own way forward đź’›

This parent shared how their son was struggling with big emotions - and how, after a long wait for support elsewhere, The Exchange stepped in with a structured programme that made all the difference. Through creative activities, honest conversations, and practical tools, he learned new ways to express and manage his feelings.

Halfway through, his parent began to see the change - more communication, more calm, and a stronger connection between them both.

“He just needed someone to talk to - someone he could trust, who wasn’t family. It really helped him open up.”

The Exchange supports children, young people, and families to build resilience and emotional wellbeing, one step at a time 🌱 Learn more at Exchange-counselling.com

🎒 Case Study: Helping a child overcome Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

When a young person's anxiety made school attendance overwhelming, mornings were filled with stress, refusals, and tears. His family felt isolated, unsure how to help.

Through our EBSA programme, they were matched with a supportive specialist who listened without judgement and provided practical tools. Together, they discovered new strategies – like the “imaginary place” drawing exercise, that built calm, confidence and connection.

✨ Today, the young person is back in school. Some days are still tough, but routines feel smoother, and his mum says: “We’re working through challenges as a team now.”

đź’› This is the difference that timely, compassionate support can make.

🌟 The impact of school counselling: from one-to-one support to whole-school change 🌟

For many young people, school can be overwhelming. Stress, anxiety, isolation, and the pressure of fitting in can quickly build up. Having someone to listen without judgment, and to offer tools that really work, can make all the difference.

At Doon Academy in East Ayrshire, pupils accessing The Exchange Child and Family Support Service described how life-changing it was to have a safe space to talk. One young person told us:

💬 “During the stressful transition to secondary school and experiencing bullying, my counsellor provided the support I needed. I feel secure knowing she is there if I need to talk.”

That sense of being heard and understood doesn’t just change one life — it can change the whole school community.

Over the past year, pupils inspired by their counselling experience decided to take things further, setting up a peer drop-in group supported by The Exchange, the school guidance team, and SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).

Every Friday afternoon, young people run the group themselves. It’s a welcoming space where pupils can drop in for a chat, to de-stress, or to share what’s on their minds. The group doesn’t replace professional counselling — but it provides a vital bridge, making it easier for pupils to open up and reducing the stigma around mental health.

💬 “These young people, many of whom have faced incredibly difficult circumstances, are now thriving. And that’s the real success story.” - Jolene McRonald, The Exchange

👉 This is what happens when counselling goes beyond a service. It sparks confidence, builds resilience, and inspires young people to support each other.
