Beth Cox - Core Patterns

Beth Cox - Core Patterns Gentle movement and pain support in Swansea, for people who want to feel safer and more confident in their body.

Core Patterns is a space for people living with pain, tension, or a body they don’t fully trust anymore. I help people in Swansea find a gentler way back into movement, without pushing, forcing, or fear of flare-ups. My work has two main strands:

✨ Restore Your Core®
Slow, supportive movement to help you feel stronger and more supported, especially if you’ve been worried about hurting yourself or making things worse.

💚 Dial Down Your Pain
Support for people living with persistent pain, focusing on understanding pain, calming the nervous system, and changing the patterns that keep pain switched on. Everything I offer is pain-informed, trauma-aware, and designed for real bodies and real lives.

Support shows up unevenly

You might notice this phase looks like...

Your body feeling unreliable. Support showing up one day and disappearing the next.

A flare-up that feels out of proportion to what you actually did.

Fear creeping in before certain movements. Your body bracing before you've even begun.

The feeling that you're going backwards. That you'll never be able to exercise. That things will only get worse.

These aren't signs that something has gone wrong.

They're patterns your body learned when things felt unsafe. Recognising them is the first step. Meeting them with curiosity rather than frustration is where things begin to shift.

Does any of this feel familiar to you?

Confidence is not something you can force.

If confidence has not returned yet, it does not mean you need more strength.

Often it means your system needs more time to trust the support that is already there.

Confidence is not something you can force.

After the acute phase. Before confidence.

When you know exercise is good for you, but every time you try it seems to set you back.

This is the space I wrote about this week.

Why protective core strategies develop.

Core strategies do not appear randomly.

They develop in response to
pain
injury
inactivity
childbirth
fatigue
long periods of stress
lack of guidance when exercising

Your body learned what worked and repeated it.

Change does not come from forcing a new strategy.

It comes from creating enough support for the body to choose differently.

It is a process of noticing and offering new options.

It’s not a quick fix but it’s a long term solution.

Remember your body is not failing you, it’s protecting you in a way that’s worked in the past.

Core strategies in everyday life

These core strategies do not just appear in exercise.
They often show up when we rush, carry shopping, stand up quickly or feel stressed.

Your body chooses the strategy that feels most reliable in that moment.

How we do one thing is how we do everything. Our patterns show-up throughout the day.

Noticing where and when these patterns appear tells you a lot more than doing more exercises ever will.

Bearing down as a core strategy

Another common core strategy is bearing down
It can feel like pushing effort downward towards the pelvis. It’s what happens when we are straining with a bowel movement.

Some people notice it when standing up, squatting or lifting something heavy.

A lot of people do this when they cough or sneeze.

Bearing down often develops when the body is under pressure and doesn’t feel able to create support from within. This can create a downward pressure on our pelvic organs.

There are lots of ways we can strengthen our legs and buttocks and create support in our core before we move our body into these positions.

Noticing a pattern is the first step before we‘re able to introduce other patterns of support.

Many people are unaware of this happening in their body.
If this is something you notice? What are you doing when this core strategy is present?

Bulging as a core strategy

For some bodies core support shows up as pushing outward when we’re exercising

The belly presses forward especially during effort
like if we were to try to do sit-ups or V-ups.

But ti might also show up when we’re lifting, standing or changing position.

This strategy often develops when the body is trying to create stability when we’re unable to find enough support from elsewhere.

Bulging is not weakness.

It is another way the body tries to manage load.

Just noticing it is enough for now.

See if you notice this happening in your body today

Bracing as a core strategy

Bracing often feels like armour
- the belly firms
- the breath shortens
- the body prepares

We often brace when we try to protect ourselves from being hurt,
if an animal were to kick your stomach you’re like to brace your abdominal muscles.
OR
in preparation if we’re trying to lift something heavy.

For some people it shows up as
- holding the breath
- tightening before moving
- feeling rigid through the middle

Bracing is not a mistake
It is a fast protective strategy

The issue comes when it is the only option available. It can lead to an increase of downward pressure on our pelvic organs, if our deep core muscles aren’t also supporting us.

Notice what you’re doing if this pattern shows up for you.

Three common core strategies

In my work I see three very common ways the body tries to create core support

Bracing
Bulging
Bearing down

They can feel very different in the body but they all have the same intention to keep you safe under load.

I’ve written an article where I describe what each strategy looks like, how you might recognise it and why your body learned it.

Clarity comes before change and
Compassion before judgment.

'I was amazed at how much I discovered in my first class.

The Restore Your Core® classes are like learning yoga all over again.

After 30 years of practising yoga, I am learning to do postures in totally different ways. From clear instructions, I’ve made small adjustments to the position of my body, and I can feel my deep core activating.

I can already feel how some of my patterns are linked to where I experience pain.

Thanks again for such a fabulous class 💗’
