Dyslexia Action Wales We support people with Dyslexia across South Wales

What strange and uncertain times we find ourselves in? So much has changed in the world of education: homeschooling; students sent home to self-isolate; class bubbles; distancing to name a few. It must be a confusing time for the children, especially the little ones. At Dyslexia Action, Wales we too have had our challenges and have needed to enhance our practices to adapt to the changes brought about by Covid. Since returning to face-to-face activities we have protective measures in place to reduce the risk of transmission and we are now able to offer virtual lessons in times of lockdown or if a student needs to self-isolate.

Children, and their parents, are very pleased to be able to resume support with us as many had struggled during lockdown. Indeed, we have had many calls from concerned parents who found that their children experienced difficulties completing the work set by schools and have needed advice and guidance. If you find yourself troubled about your child's progress and don't know where to turn please email me, Sheila Thomas, and I will be happy to help.

This will be followed at 7.30 by a session for teachers (SENCos, ALNCos and exam officers) on the 2017-18 JCQ regulations for exam access arrangements. Find a way to help others
email from Liz Taylor

I’m a parent of a dyslexic 4th grader. Our son was diagnosed in 1st grade and he is now in a wonderful and supportive school that allows his Barton tutoring during the school day. He has made remarkable progress in the past 2 years. It hasn’t been easy but he is doing the hard work and moving forward through your program.

I am an illustrator and I wanted to find a way to use my abilities to share his story and the story of so many courageous dyslexic kids in a visual way. So, I created the illustration that I have attached to this email. It was a wonderfully fulfilling project and my heart is to share it as much as possible if it can be a help to parents, students and their teachers.

This by no means captures everything that it means to be a dyslexic student in school, but my hope is that there is enough here to help parents and students to facilitate productive dialog with the professionals working with their children.

I saw you speak once in the early and blurry days of his initial diagnosis and I remember you saying that once you are through the fire, find a way to help others. This is my hope with this illustration. I hope you enjoy it as the labor of love that it is and I would be overjoyed if you shared it with parents who might find it useful.

Thank you for your life’s work. It is important and good.

Best,
Liz Taylor
