Dressability

Dressability Welcome! We believe that well-fitting, comfortable clothing should be accessible for every body.

We are the Swindon-based charity providing clothing adaptations and tailoring for people with disabilities, older people, and anyone with limited dexterity. Clothing comes in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes that is simply not enough! For people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and the over 65's, finding clothes that reflect a personal style, fit well and are easy to take on or

off, can be hard. To make life easier Dressability provides a low cost clothing adaptation and alteration service to people who need their clothes to fit well, feel comfortable and remain stylish. Whatever physical challenges you face, Dressability can help tailor your clothing so that getting dressed or being dressed becomes an everyday routine rather than a daily problem! Dressability is one of only two independent clothing services in the UK which caters specifically for the needs of disabled people. We work with other voluntary organisations, disability support groups, social workers and healthcare professionals. Because of our experience of clothing and disability, our advice has also been sought by the legal profession. Dressability is a registered charity which has a board of trustees who are legally responsible for all the charity´s activities.

This Sunday, it’s time. The London Marathon is almost here.

We’re incredibly grateful to have two amazing runners taking on this challenge for Dressability - David Warren and Julie Viret.

While most of us will be watching from the sidelines, David Warren and Julie Viret will be out there putting in the miles for Dressability. It’s a huge personal challenge, and we don’t take for granted that they’ve chosen to do it in support of us.

Fundraising like this helps us keep doing what we do, supporting people to wear clothing that works for them and feel more like themselves day to day.

If you’re able to support them, even a small donation or a share makes a real difference.

A warm welcome from the community 🤍

Our Vice Chair, Nicky, recently delivered a talk to ABC Cancer, a Swindon-based self-help group supporting patients, carers, relatives and friends affected by cancer.

The group meets twice a month at Lawn Community Centre, offering a space for people to talk openly and share experiences.

They are supported by NHS England and Macmillan Cancer Support, and it was clear to see just how valuable that support network is.

Nicky was made to feel incredibly welcome, and it was great to see such genuine interest in what we do at Dressability.

One of the members, Chris, was particularly keen to learn more and visited us the following day for a tour of our workspace, which was lovely to see.

Thank you to everyone at ABC Cancer for hosting our talk, and for the important work you do within the community.

Next Sunday 26th April, both Julie Viret and David Warren will be taking on the London Marathon for Dressability.

They have both put a huge amount of time and effort into getting to this point, and we are incredibly grateful that they have chosen to support us in this way.

Every donation helps us continue providing clothing adaptations that make a real difference to people’s independence, comfort and confidence. If you are able to support, or even just share their pages, it all genuinely helps.

For many families, getting dressed can be one of the most challenging parts of the day.

Simple clothing adaptations can make a real difference, such as:

• Replacing buttons with Velcro or magnetic fastenings
• Adding side or shoulder openings for easier dressing
• Adjusting waistbands for comfort while seated
• Making space for orthotics, braces or medical equipment

These changes can help reduce stress in daily routines and support greater comfort and independence.

At Dressability, we work with families to adapt clothing they already own or love, so children can keep their favourite outfits while making them easier to wear.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲

Today is about raising awareness and showing support for those living with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s affects everyone differently, but for many people it can make everyday tasks, including getting dressed, more difficult.

At Dressability, we see first-hand how small, thoughtful adaptations can make a real difference to comfort, confidence and independence. That might be something as simple as replacing buttons with velcro or magnets, or making clothing easier to put on and take off.

Clothing might seem simple, but when it works properly for someone, it can change their day completely.

We regularly support people living with neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, and share a building with the Neuro Wellbeing Centre, who offer additional support locally.

If you think we might be able to help, or would like to find out more about our adaptations, please get in touch.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲

When people think about health, clothing is rarely the first thing that comes to mind.

But for many people, what they wear can have a real impact on comfort throughout the day. Tight seams, awkward fastenings, clothing that presses when seated, or outfits that make it harder to manage medical equipment can all add unnecessary difficulty to everyday life.

At Dressability we adapt existing clothing so it works better for the person wearing it. Often that means simple, thoughtful changes that make getting dressed easier and allow someone to keep wearing clothes they already like.

This year’s World Health Day theme is “Together for Science.” In our own way, that’s something we see every day. Finding the right solution often means experimenting with different materials, fastenings, tools and techniques until we find what works best for each individual.

Sometimes it might be adapting school uniform so a child using a wheelchair can wear the same dress as their classmates. Sometimes it is replacing difficult buttons with easier fastenings, or adjusting clothing so medical equipment can be managed more easily.

Health and wellbeing are shaped by many small things. Sometimes clothing is one of them. By adapting, mending and upcycling clothing, we can also help reduce waste rather than seeing perfectly good garments thrown away.

If clothing has become more difficult to manage, we’d love to see if we can help.

🐣 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝

From everyone here at Dressability, we’d just like to wish our clients, volunteers, supporters and friends a very happy Easter.

We hope the long weekend brings a bit of time to relax, see family or friends, enjoy some fresh air, and maybe a little treat too.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support the work we do. It means a great deal to our small team and helps us keep providing clothing adaptations that support independence and make everyday life easier for our clients.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡

Getting dressed should be simple, but for many people it can be one of the more frustrating parts of the day.

Buttons that are difficult to manage, fabrics that irritate the skin, clothing that does not work comfortably when seated, or fastenings that require constant help can all turn a normal morning into a stressful one.

At Dressability we adapt clothing for disabled children and adults, as well as those with limited dexterity, helping remove some of those everyday challenges. As a charity, our aim is to make everyday clothing easier, more comfortable and more practical to wear.

From easier fastenings to more comfortable designs, small practical changes can help make daily routines calmer and more manageable.

If clothing has become a barrier, we may be able to help.

Give us a call on 01793 512878 or email dressmaking@dressability.org.uk
and one of our team will see how we can help make things easier for you.

Great to be part of something new in the local care community.

We were invited along to the very first networking session hosted by Walfinch this week, following a visit from Managing Director Sarah Stanbrook to Dressability last year.

After seeing first-hand the impact of what we do, it was great to be invited into a room of like-minded professionals, all focused on supporting people within the elderly care sector.

It was a really positive morning, with plenty of open conversation, new connections and shared ideas around how we can better support individuals within our community.

Opportunities like this are a great reminder of how much can be achieved through collaboration, and we’re looking forward to being part of future sessions.

If clothing has become more difficult to manage, we may be able to help.

Not all fabrics behave the same.

Some stretch.
Some hold their shape.
Some are soft and breathable.
Others are more structured or durable.

When we’re adapting clothing, this makes a huge difference.

The right fabric can make something easier to put on, more comfortable to wear, and better suited to everyday life.

The wrong one can do the opposite.

This “Periodic Table of Fabrics” put together by Stone Fabrics is a really useful way of seeing just how many different options there are, and why choosing the right one matters.

At Dressability, it’s not just about the alteration. It’s about making sure the fabric works for the person wearing it.
