Rae-Marie R: From Surviving to Thriving — My Menopause Story!
There was a time when I was just surviving.
Menopause hit me like a storm — a turbulent, emotional, and often isolating experience that affected every part of my life. I struggled silently for far too long, unsure where to turn or who to talk to. But through that pain, something powerful was born: a purpose.
After navigating my own battle with menopause, I made a promise — no woman, no family, should have to go through this journey alone.
That promise led me on a path of learning, healing, and helping. I began to rebuild — not just myself, but a life that could uplift others too.
As a qualified FE (Further Education) teacher, I knew that education and support were key. I partnered with The Menopause Experts Group to deepen my understanding and expand my ability to help.
In February 2024, I became a licensed Menopause Champion, fully committed to advocating for women’s health and wellbeing.
I completed a NACHE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling and Helping Skills, to become a better listener and provide truly compassionate, person-centred support.
I now run two free monthly support groups for women navigating menopause — safe, welcoming spaces to connect, share, and thrive.
I also continue to invest in my own professional development, keeping my knowledge current and my approach informed, so I can offer the best support possible.
And just when I found my voice — life gave me a microphone.
Nearly two years on, I’m proud to be a co-host and trainee producer on the Girls About Town radio show, using media to break taboos and open up real conversations about menopause, mental health, and self-care.
I’ve also taken my message into colleges, workplaces, and community groups, where I speak and educate to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and empower women through knowledge.
Why this matters — the bigger picture:
According to a 2022 survey by the Fawcett Society, 1 in 10 women have left their job due to menopause symptoms.
Another 44% said their ability to work was affected, but they felt unable to talk about it or ask for help.
Brain fog — including forgetfulness, loss of focus, and confidence — was one of the most common reasons women feared speaking out, worried they’d be judged or dismissed.
I know that fear — I lived it. I’ve felt the panic of forgetting words mid-sentence. I’ve avoided conversations I once led with confidence. And I’ve seen capable, brilliant women shrink themselves to avoid embarrassment.
This is why I speak up now — so others can find their voice before they lose it.
What began as a personal survival story has turned into something so much bigger. I started this journey so families wouldn’t have to suffer in silence like I did — and I’ve ended up helping more people than I could’ve ever imagined.
I’m so grateful I’m still in this world, still standing, still shining.
This is my Rae of Sunshine — and now I’m back.
