As autumn turns to winter, the days shorten and the nights seem to arrive far too soon.

This shift can bring comfort to some, a time for slowing down, reflection and rest. But for others, it can feel heavy and draining.

If you notice your mood dipping or motivation waning, be gentle with yourself. You are responding to a natural change in rhythm.

Try small ways to bring warmth and light into your days:

- Light a candle or lamp to create a cosy space
- Spend time outside, even briefly, to catch natural daylight
- Check in with someone who lifts your spirits
- Create small rituals that help you feel grounded and calm

Winter invites us to pause and care for ourselves differently.

You do not need to push through. It is perfectly OK to slow down, to rest, and to find your light in small, everyday moments.

Thank You to Our Trustees!

As Trustees’ Week comes to a close, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful trustees for everything they do to support Somerset Counselling Centre. Their time, care, and guidance play such an important role in helping us provide accessible, professional counselling across Somerset.

We’d also like to extend our thanks to trustees everywhere. The work you do makes a lasting difference to the charities and communities you serve.

Your commitment truly matters — and we’re so grateful for all that you do.

Every firework begins with one spark.

Sometimes that spark is rest, sometimes it is reaching out for help, sometimes it is simply taking a moment to breathe.

Looking after your health and wellbeing is not about grand gestures; it is about noticing what you need and allowing yourself the time to reset. It might be stepping outside for a walk, talking to someone you trust, or simply pausing long enough to gather your thoughts.

Even the smallest spark can grow into something powerful. Give yourself permission to slow down, reconnect, and start again.

This week is Trustees Week.

We're looking for a new Trustee - could it be you?

Are you passionate about mental health, counselling, and the wellbeing of others?

We're especially keen to hear from people with a background in child counselling, mental health, and wellbeing roles. Your insight and experience could help shape the future of our Centre and ensure we continue to offer high-quality, affordable counselling to those who need it most in the community.

Being a trustee is a rewarding way to give back and make a meaningful difference.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, please contact us to express your interest or learn more.

It’s National Sandwich Day! 🥪

From a classic cheese and pickle to an adventurous falafel and hummus wrap, everyone has their favourite sandwich filling. Some like it simple, others pile on all the extras, and that’s what makes it interesting.

It’s a good reminder that, just like sandwiches, not everyone’s filling will be to your taste, and that’s perfectly okay. In life, we all bring something different to the table. Appreciating those differences, even if they’re not your personal preference, helps us understand and value one another.

So today, as you tuck into your favourite sandwich, take a moment to celebrate variety, in flavours and in people. Every combination has its own unique value.

We'd also love to know - what's your go to sarnie?

At Halloween, we often put on masks and costumes, a playful way to become someone else for a while.

But many of us wear invisible masks every day. Masks of strength, calm, humour or perfection that quietly hide what we really feel underneath.

Sometimes those masks protect us — they help us cope, fit in, or get through difficult days. But over time, they can become heavy to hold.

It takes courage to take one off, to say, “Actually, I am not fine today.” To be honest with yourself or with someone you trust.

True wellbeing begins when we feel safe enough to be real.

So today, take a quiet moment and ask yourself "what mask am I wearing, and what would it feel like to let it slip, even just a little?"

🛒 Hey Taunton Tesco shoppers, we need your vote!

We're one of three charities being supported by Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme, and your blue token could make a big difference. Your support will help us provide affordable counselling for 11–15-year-olds who need mental health support right now.

How to help:

When you shop between October 2025 and mid-January 2026, simply pop your blue token in for us at any of these local stores:

• Galmington Taunton Express, TA1 4TY
• Taunton Superstore, TA1 4AB
• Lisieux Way Express, TA1 2PD
• Rex Taunton Express, TA1 3ES
• Taunton High Street, TA1 3PN
• Priorswood Road Express, TA2 7PS

How to vote:

Collect a blue token from on top of the self-service tills or ask your cashier for one, then drop it into our box, usually found near the store exit.

It is quick, simple, and makes a real impact. Every blue token helps us reach more young people and families across our community.

So next time you do your shop, please remember us ... blue token, Somerset Counselling Centre, and a stronger start for local young people.

Our London Marathon runner and fundraiser, Jessica, has been busy raising funds in the sweetest way possible, by hosting her very own cake sale! We were lucky enough to pop along, and we can confirm… the cakes were absolutely delicious.

A huge well done to Jessica for her creativity, energy, and continued commitment to supporting Somerset Counselling Centre. We’re so proud of the effort she’s putting into both her training and fundraising.

A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Jess and Robin, who are taking on the to raise vital funds for our charity.

We caught up with Robin to see how his training is going, and he’s absolutely smashing it! He has already completed runs covering half the marathon distance.

Here’s a fun fact. Robin’s training buddy is his four-legged friend Mabel, who you can spot in the photo!

Thanks so much, Robin, for putting in all the hard work and training to support our charity. It means a lot.

If you would like to support Robin along his journey, you can donate by:

We’ll be sharing an update on our other runner, Jess’s progress, later this week.

Team SCC had a great time taking part in the Moonraker Challenge on Saturday night. They took this atmospheric photo too!

It was a great opportunity for us to support other local charities. We really enjoyed taking part in such a well-organised event.

We also had the pleasure of meeting representatives from the nominated charity, Neroche Woodlanders at Young Wood, and hearing more about the fantastic work they do.

A big thank you to everyone involved for making it such an enjoyable event.

Greater Freedom

Counselling helps you explore the way you think and act; to see how you may be repeating unhelpful patterns of behaviour or thinking. It can also help you explore the way you deal with relationships and conflict.

You can bring thoughts and feelings, which you may not feel able to share with friends or family. You are free to talk safely, without fear of rejection, criticism or blame. Your counsellor will not tell you what to do but will help you to make your own choices and to make changes in your life that offer greater freedom in thought and action.

SCC counsellors come from a range of different trainings and incorporate a variety of counselling models including psychodynamic, person-centred, integrative and humanistic.

To give counselling the best chance of working the sessions need to be weekly. The counselling session lasts 50 minutes. Counselling can be time limited 6 – 12 sessions, or over a longer period of time depending on requirement, this will be discussed more fully at your initial consultation.
