Many people assume that being “balanced” means being perfectly symmetrical. But the research shows that isn’t how human bodies are built — or how they perform.
A large 2022 review highlighted that asymmetry is normal, functional, and expected. Even elite athletes show 5–15% differences between limbs without any reduction in performance.
Importantly, current evidence shows that asymmetry does not automatically increase injury risk. In fact, it’s often the injury that creates the asymmetry, especially after issues like ACL tears.
So rather than chasing perfect 50/50 symmetry, you’ll get better results by focusing on:
• Strength
• Tissue capacity
• Load tolerance
• Confident, varied movement
These are the qualities that help keep you active, resilient, and doing the things you love
