Winter-Proof Your Joints: What to Know Before It Gets Colder
As the days get shorter and the temperature starts to drop, it’s not just our mood or energy that can take a hit, our joints and our bodies often feel the shift too.
If you notice your knees are a little creakier, your back a bit stiffer, or it takes longer to get going in the morning, you’re not imagining it. Changes in weather, especially the cold or dampness, can affect joint mobility and circulation. For those already managing arthritis or long-standing injuries, this seasonal shift can be even more noticeable.
However, there are simple things you can do to support your joints and reduce stiffness this winter, and now is the perfect time to start.
1. Keep Moving - even when it’s cold!
It’s tempting to hibernate when it’s chilly outside, but regular movement is one of the best things you can do for joint health.
Movement increases circulation, which brings warmth and nutrients to your joints.
It helps keep the surrounding muscles strong and flexible, reducing pressure on the joints themselves.
Try gentle walking, stretching, yoga, or swimming. Even small amounts done regularly can make a big difference.
2. Layer Up Before You Head Out
Cold weather can tighten up muscles and make joints feel more rigid. Keeping your body warm helps you stay more comfortable and avoid unnecessary strain.
Wear gloves, scarves and extra layers, especially around sensitive areas like your neck and lower back.
Warm up indoors before heading out for exercise, maybe do a few shoulder rolls, ankle circles or gentle stretches.
3. Hydrate and Nourish
We often drink less water in winter, but hydration is just as important when it comes to joint and body health.
Include omega-3-rich foods like oily fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, which help support joint function and reduce inflammation.
4. Book a Pre-Winter Check-In!
An osteopathic session may help:

Address areas of compensation or imbalance
Support your circulation and lymphatic flow
Offer personalised advice on posture, movement and joint care
Think of it as a winter tune-up for your body, so you can feel more comfortable, mobile, and relaxed..
