Hi guys, just a little history of Tang Soo Do from my personal experience. In the 1980’s Grandmaster Hwang Kee introduced the Chil Sung hyung which are based on his interpretation of the Moo Yei Dobo Tonji (1790) (a unique collection of ancient Korean fighting techniques) which he discovered in a Seoul library and created 13 new hyungs (Yuk Ro 6 paths & 7 Chil Sung Seven star) also incorporating techniques from the Chinese hyung SoHoYun….
Prior to that we only practiced hard Shotokan style - Kong Sang Koon ( see below performed expertly by Master Rob Hedges) and Chinto, Jion, Wang Shu, etc. The addition of the Chil Sung/Yuk Ro and Qi gong (Moo/Mun Pal) was the most challenging time for us since we were only used to hard style up to that point. In fact I recall Grandmaster Kang Uk Lee decided to suspend the “traditional “ forms for a year or so to allow concentrated practice of the Chil Sung. Later, the “traditional “ forms were reintroduced into the syllabus as the Chil Sung were considered too advanced and complex for junior members. I have always considered that we practice Tang (Soo Bahk) Do to the present day.
This is what makes our art so unique. Tang Soo !
