Having spoken to a few people today about fireworks and mentioned some helpful odds and ends, this image demonstrates how to tie the Ttouch half body wrap. It does the same thing as a thundershirt but you can use a scarf or a piece of bandage. Cheaper and probably closer to hand.
Worth mentioning we don't tie it too tight or you'll either have the opposite effect or it'll be way too effective! ππ¬
My biggest piece of advice? Don't pretend they aren't happening. If they need snuggles then crack on and snuggle them. You should be their number one safe place. Pretending it isn't happening must make them feel like they're losing their minds! Don't panic by any means but maintain a calm, reassuring, sense of normality when they lose track of their senses and need grounding.
Other management tips are ‡οΈ
π Happy Hoodies - We use these for the hair dryers and they're fab for dampening noise. If your dog is used to having a weird sleeve on their head (when they're with us for example π) Then go for it. If they're not then they need careful introduction before any sustained wearing of them!
π A safe space like a crate or a better insulated room (bathrooms with no windows are popular.) Pad it out with a comfy bed and if possible cover it over for extra sound insulation and feelings of safety. I don't recommend trapping them anywhere but making sure they have options and they're comfy where they choose to hide is fab.
π Get all the exercise you can in before it gets scary or dark outside. They'll be anticipating it if it's dark so just not worth the association.
π Enrichment puzzles, frozen treats, lick mats, safe chews, safely destroyable cardboard and snuffle games. All great distractions and lovely and calming. Make their tea last as long as you can! Keep them busy.
π Classic FM - Pet Classics. Not everyone's bag but it can really work miracles! Close the blinds and get any kind of music playing to mute the noise from outside.
π There are loads of supplements you can try including, pet remedy and skullcap and valerian. But remember if you really struggle you can always speak to your vets about getting medications to help when there are planned events you need support through! It won't hurt them and you'll all rest so much easier!
Good luck out there β€οΈ x
