Hello Tenterden! 👋🏼

D’Animal Osteopathy is now in the area for all of your four-legged friends 🐶🐴

Canine and equine osteopathy is just like osteopathy for hoomans: we all have joints, muscles and ligaments that can cause pain and restrictions, and we would all want help with those!

But animals aren’t always as good at telling us they are in pain, so it’s up to us (their lucky hoomans) to look out for the signs and seek a specialized osteopath for help.

Check out future posts about the secret ways your dog or horse may be telling you they need some help 🙈

Or check out my website (link in bio) for more information and contact details.

All the best,

GRASS SEEDS: It’s that time of year again!

I just pulled about 10 of these bastards out of my Springer’s paws.

These little buggers may seem innocuous to us hoomans, but they can be very harmful to our furry friends, so watch out!

Often found in the tall grasses of spring and summer, the seeds have a very sharp end that can puncture the webbing of a dog’s foot, or get into their eyes and ears quite easily. They may just cause pain and local infection, but if they go unnoticed, they can burrow deeper into the skin and travel elsewhere in the body (sometimes ending up in the chest area, a big no-no!)

All dogs can be affected by grass seed, but it’s more common in dogs with grinch-like hairy feet and shaggy ears. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of checking your dogs feet, ears and eyes after taking them for a walk in tall grassy areas!

A dog may lick incessantly at their paws, or shake their heads and scratch at their ears if they have a grass seed that’s bothering them. Or they have an unusual amount of sleepy eye goop if they have one in their eye. But if ever in doubt, consult your vet 🩺⛑

This little nugget didn’t want to sit still long enough to get a decent photo, so this one will have to do!

I was delighted to meet little Daisy this morning, a 7mo cockerpoo who specializes in squeaky toys, ear licks, earring nibbles, and melting hearts.

Little Daisy has been quite sore in her hind limbs for the last few weeks after any kind of walk. After checking her out thoroughly and releasing some very tight muscles, she’s off to get some images to rule out hip dysplasia. Both of Daisy’s hips give off an unhappy sounding clunk when going through their range of motion, so it’s best to get it imaged as she’s such a youngin’ and we don’t want it to get any worse.

Wishing Daisy lots of luck, and I’m hoping I get to see her again when we’ve ruled out the unspeakable.

Keeping your hot doggies safe!

As the summer temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that dogs do not sweat and are not as good at regulating their temperatures as us.

Top tips for hanging out with a hot doggy 🌭

🔹 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when things are cooler
🔹 If your dog loves the water, maximize on that and take them swimming !
🔹 Play games with the garden hose 💦 remembering that a dog’s armpits and tummy are the best places to cool them down with cold water
🔹 If you’re stuck at home, teach your pup a new trick or play games! Mental stimulation is so much more effective at creating a tired doggo
🔹 Buy a cooling sleeping mat or a cooling kerchief to wear from Amazon or similar
🔹 If you’re just thinking of taking your dog around the block, step your barefoot on the pavement; if it’s too hot for you, it’s also too hot their little paws 🐾

If in doubt, just remember that a day without a walk won’t kill a dog, but sometimes a walk in the heat can.

Enjoy the sun and be safe ☀️
