🩷17–23 November is Self‑Care Week: our reminder to pause, breathe, and look after ourselves – not through grand gestures, but through everyday, meaningful acts.

❤️ What does self‑care really mean?
It’s not about indulgence or being perfect. It’s about the small‑but‑steady things that make a difference to how we feel and keep us resilient:

Give your mind a break when the inbox pings.
Saying no (or not yet) when your plate’s full.
Having a proper break, even five minutes away from the screen, counts.
Checking in with a colleague or friend, and meaning it.
Moving a little more than yesterday, eating something decent, sleeping a little better.

Busy teams, shifting priorities, and stretched resources can mean wellbeing slips down the list. But when it becomes a habit, it helps sustain morale, mental wellbeing and performance at work. As an organisation, when you support that culture, you’re investing in your people for the long term.

So aim to make self‑care simple and real.
No big fanfare needed. Small changes and consistent choices can make a huge difference.

Ask yourself this week: “What one small thing will I do to look after myself ?” Then schedule it, daily, weekly or whatever works for you.

And: If your organisation hasn’t yet embedded wellbeing training as part of its culture we should talk. Hornbeam Training offers support for building that infrastructure: from practical self‑care workshops to mental health first‑aid alignment.

This month we want you to highlight the colleagues in your organisation who hold the line when it matters most – your Mental Health First Aiders. They’re trained to notice when someone’s not quite themself, start a safe conversation, and signpost to help.
They’re not counsellors. They don’t solve everything. But their presence can transform the workplace by making support visible, approachable and real.

If you’re one of those MHFAiders – thank you. You’re helping shape a workplace where people feel seen, heard, and included.

If you’re a team leader, HR professional or business owner – now is the time to recognise your MHFAiders, and to ask: “Who’s next in the toolkit?”

Tag your MHFAiders and share a sentence about why they matter.

Not trained yet? Book your next MHFA course with us – give yourself (or your staff) the confidence and skills to support each other.

Complement with financial wellbeing: Add our FinWELL Financial Wellbeing Champion course to your wellbeing strategy and empower your team to feel money‑confident too.

A small question can change everything.

Men often delay seeking help — fearing judgement or appearing weak.

But asking twice, listening once, can open the door to support.

☕ Check in with a colleague today.
🗣️ Ask twice — the second time often gets the truth.
💬 Listen without fixing.
Our MHFA and Su***de First Aid courses equip teams to hold these conversations with confidence.

Movember is more than a moustache — it’s become a movement for men’s mental health, su***de prevention, and physical wellbeing.

Did you know that regardless of gender, anyone can experience a mental health concern or condition? While women are twice as likely to experience depression as men, men are more commonly diagnosed with substance use disorders and antisocial behaviours.

Gender differences are complex, and there are numerous factors to consider alongside the statistics, such as the likelihood that men are more reluctant to report their experiences.

This month, in recognition of Movember why not:

- consider hosting a wellbeing walk one lunchtime
- encourage open conversations at work
- share stories that break the MH stigma

Hornbeam can help weave these actions into your wellbeing strategy — through MHFA, SFA, and leadership coaching.

Visit our website to learn more or get in touch, and let's talk.

November is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month. It's a time to confront the reality behind the shocking statistics:

- Men die by su***de at three times the rate of women in the UK.
- In 2023, the male su***de rate in England and Wales was 17.4 deaths per 100,000.
- Only 12.5% of men in England have a diagnosed common mental health disorder — many suffer in silence.

At Hornbeam Training, we help workplaces become lifelines. We know that safe spaces and informed teams save lives.

Our training — from MHFA England to Su***de First Aid — equips people with the confidence to support people with their mental health before a crisis hits.

We’ve got a Mental Health First Aid course running on November 10- 11th, and it always reminds us: support doesn’t have to be complicated — it just has to be real.

💡Even if you're not booked on, here’s a small action: take five minutes this week to check in with someone you've not seen in a while. It matters.

📣 “You’d never know from the outside.”

It’s something we hear often in our sessions. Someone speaks about a time they were struggling — maybe with anxiety, burnout, grief, depression — and they end by saying:
“I was showing up. I was smiling. No one had a clue.”

It’s a powerful reminder that mental health challenges often don’t look like we expect. People can seem “fine” while feeling overwhelmed. They can work hard, show up on time, hit deadlines — and still be battling quietly behind the scenes.
That’s why storytelling matters.

Sharing real experiences helps:
• Break down stigma
• Encourage early conversations
• Help others feel less alone
• Show what support can actually look like

Not everyone feels safe to share their story (and that’s okay). But for those who can — even in a small way — it can be the spark that shifts your workplace culture from “we don’t talk about that” to “we get it, and we’ve got you.”

💡 Here’s something to try:

This week, invite space for stories in your team. It might be:

• A lived experience blog post or internal share
• An anonymous "things I wish people knew" message board
• A short video or quote from someone who's been through it
• Or just a moment to say, “You don’t have to have it all together here.”

The power of real stories is that they remind us: we’re all human. And we’re not alone.

Menopause and mental health: is that something you ever discuss?

It should be!

October is Menopause Awareness Month — and while hot flushes get the headlines, the mental load is just as important.

Anxiety. Low mood. Brain fog. Sleep disruption. It can affect confidence, relationships, and how people show up at work.

🟣 This month, take a moment to ask: Does our workplace make space for this conversation?

If it doesn't, feel free to get in touch to discuss ways that we help.

OCD Awareness Week (13–19 October)

🌀 OCD is more than handwashing.

It’s intrusive thoughts, compulsive rituals, mental exhaustion — and often, shame.
OCD is often misunderstood — awareness Week and beyond is a chance to talk honestly, clear up confusion, and support each other with a bit more compassion

• It’s not quirky.
• It’s not “just being organised.”
• It deserves understanding, not jokes.
