Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored the fascinating role of the vagus nerve — the body’s ultimate conductor of calm.

In this final part, we look at simple, practical ways to support it every day:
🌬 Deep breathing
🎵 Humming
😂 Laughter
❄️ Cold water exposure
💆 Massage

Each of these helps activate the vagus nerve and shift your body out of “fight or flight” into “rest and digest.”

Watch our new short video to discover how these small actions can make a real difference to your wellbeing.

In Part 1, we looked at how the vagus nerve helps calm the body and mind.

In this second instalment, we dive deeper into what makes it so extraordinary — a nerve that connects your brain, heart, lungs, and gut, regulating everything from inflammation to emotional balance.

First described by Galen over 2,000 years ago, the “Great Nerve” continues to fascinate researchers exploring its role in immunity, mood, and even long COVID.

Watch our new short video to see how this quiet network helps keep your body in harmony — and stay tuned for Part 3, coming soon.

Most of us know what stress feels like… but few realise how powerfully the body can calm itself when the right systems are activated.

The vagus nerve runs from your brain to your abdomen — helping regulate heart rate, digestion, and relaxation.

Massage, breathing, and gentle movement all help to stimulate it, bringing you out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and digest.” 🧘‍♂️

We’ve made a short video explaining how massage supports this natural calming system — take a minute to breathe, watch, and reset.

Why is staying active such a struggle — even though we know it’s good for us?

Because exercise is a modern invention.
👣 For most of history, humans moved for survival — not for fitness goals.

Our ancestors:
✅ Walked, danced, carried, dug
✅ Sat often — but got up and moved frequently
✅ Built just enough strength to live well — not bulk up

Today, we’re lucky. We’ve got modern tools they never dreamed of:
💪 Training techniques
🥗 Good nutrition
🛠️ Medical and recovery support (like massage)

And the benefits of regular movement are clear:
✔️ Supports repair systems
✔️ Reduces disease risk
✔️ Boosts longevity & quality of life — especially as we age

Movement doesn’t have to be extreme — just consistent.

👇 Want support with staying active, managing injury, or building habits that last?
We’re here for that.

Could movement help protect your body from cancer?

It might sound surprising, but there’s growing research showing that regular movement plays a role in reducing the risk of several common cancers — including breast, bowel, and womb cancer.

It’s not just about fitness or fat loss. It’s about how movement affects:
✔️ Hormone regulation
✔️ Inflammation levels
✔️ Immune system function

Even gentle, consistent activity has benefits — especially when paired with rest, recovery, and support from therapies like massage.

We see the positive effects of movement every day at Massage Matters.
If you’d like to move more, but don’t know where to start — we can help.
