DEFIBRILLATORS AND FIRST AID IN THE WORKPLACE:

Research from health charity St John Ambulance shows that a quarter of UK adults have experienced a cardiac arrest incident in some way, either as a first aider, bystander or patient. With more than one in seven cardiac arrest incidents occurring in the workplace, access to defibrillators is critical. Prompt CPR and defibrillation – which delivers an electric shock to restore someone’s normal heart rhythm – can more than double survival rates during cardiac arrest. Yet, over half of people don’t know how to give CPR, while almost two-thirds lack confidence to use defibrillators at work.

A lack of first aid training also contributes to the confidence gap, as nearly half (49%) of people would feel panicked if faced with a medical emergency. However, the study finds there is a strong appetite to learn: more than half (56%) consider cardiac arrest response among the most important first aid skills. 16% also believe mandatory first aid training at work would most encourage people to help in a first aid emergency, including using a defibrillator.

Although state schools are the only UK workplaces required to install defibrillators by law, all employers must provide “adequate and appropriate” first aid equipment based on risk assessments. For higher risk environments, not having a defibrillator could be considered a breach of the employer’s duty of care.

Its been a busy few weeks hence the lack of social media posts.

FAW courses for Alverton Community Primary School in Northallerton, and Claro Enterprises in Starbeck.

Paediatric courses for First Steps Day-care Nursery in Thirsk and Bedale Day-care Nursery at Leeming Bar.

As well as mini medics courses for the yr6 students at South Otterington Primary school nr Northallerton.

We met two very amazing children who have unfortunately had to perform CPR on family members as they were first on scene and we able to follow the 999 dispatchers instructions until help arrived. Both were keen to learn more to help with their own coping mechanisms and should they ever need to do it again. Their shared experiences don't seem to have put them off which is fantastic.

Proud to have been involved with this event again.

International Stress Awareness Week is an annual event held from the 3rd – 7th November 2025, dedicated to raising awareness about stress, its impact, and how to manage it effectively. In today’s fast-paced world, stress can feel unavoidable—draining our energy, affecting our health, and taking a toll on our overall well-being. With 79% of adults in the UK experiencing stress at least once a month, it’s clear that stress is a common part of life, however it doesn’t have to be a constant companion.

Why it matters

Work-related stress remains one of the leading causes of ill health at work. In 2023/24, 776,000 workers reported stress, depression or anxiety, accounting for nearly half of all self-reported work-related ill health and contributing to 16.4 million working days lost.

When businesses fail to manage stress effectively it can also result in reduced productivity and higher staff turnover.

The Resuscitation Council UK have today published their changes to the resuscitation and first aid guidelines. Attached is the executive summery of those reviews.

In short some simple changes have been introduced. One being calling 999 for an unresponsive casualty before checking an airway. Another is to use the two-thumb encircling method for chest compressions in infants.

An introduction to the 2025 Guidelines, including details of key changes.

Well that’s it another day under our belts. Today we were at Queen Mary's School topcliffe in our Sessay Community First Responders role to help support Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust in today’s activities. Over 100 children taught CPR and Defibrillator use. A great day was had. The girls were brilliant and there were lots of questions both about CPR application and our roles with the NHS. More potential lifesavers trained. Photos courtesy of queen Mary’s school.
