Sometimes handwriting struggles don’t start with the pencil.. they start with the hand.
In school OT sessions we often use simple tools like foam squeeze balls to strengthen the small muscles inside the hand. These muscles are responsible for grip stability, pencil control, and endurance during classroom tasks.
When children gently squeeze, hold, and release, they’re developing:
• Grip strength
• Pencil pressure control
• Hand endurance for longer tasks
• More efficient letter formation
So instead of tiring quickly, avoiding work, or pressing too hard.. their hands are ready for learning.
This is why OT in schools isn’t just “extra help”.. it’s preparation that makes classroom learning accessible.
💙 At Future Steps, our occupational therapy assessments look deeper than the behaviour you see.. identifying the sensory, motor and regulation needs underneath so we can build a tailored plan that supports success in everyday school life.
