"If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again."

These words speak to the ache of longing we feel when someone we love is no longer with us. As a funeral celebrant, I witness daily the depth of this grief, but also the beauty of remembrance - the stories, the laughter, the legacy.

Though we cannot bring them back, we can honour them with love, with words, and with rituals that help carry us forward.

Today, may your memories be a gentle path beneath your feet, and your tears a testament to a love that endures beyond time.

From Darkness Comes Light

This is where I find myself on almost a daily basis. It can be the middle of a summers day in a chapel filled with one hundred people yet there is a shadow of darkness consuming the room. As I start to share untold stories and family and friends hear memories of those we've lost, the strength of light overpowers the darkness. Just as the saying "From Darkness Comes Light," each celebration of life serves as a reminder that even in our sorrow, the beautiful stories and cherished moments bring warmth and hope.

As I stand here, I strive to honour the unique journey of each individual, capturing their spirit through the memories that define them. Together, we create a space where love shines through the darkness, reminding us that their legacy continues to inspire and uplift us.

Let’s celebrate those we love and keep their light shining bright.

I recently had the privilege of conducting a celebration of life service for T/L Gary Hart. I met with his wonderful wife, Julie, and their children, Hannah and Glyn. It was a deeply moving experience and the connection between us was clear from the offset.

For me, every service is unique, and I believe in the importance of detail. While some may be satisfied with a generic approach, I dig deep to uncover the essence of each individual's story. Each eulogy begins as a blank page, carefully crafted to reflect the life, passions, and memories of the person being honoured.

Thank you, Julie, Hannah, and Glyn, for allowing me to be part of Gary's legacy. Your feedback means the world to me and reinforces my commitment to the work I do.

"How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." – A.A. Milne.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is undeniably difficult, but it also highlights the beauty of the life we've shared. Each moment spent together is a reminder of the joy and connection that made our relationship so special.

Though the loss may be heavy, it’s a reflection of the richness of our experiences and the love we built along the way. Instead of solely focusing on the heartache, let’s celebrate the incredible journey we had together.

Life is meant to be lived fully, and the pain of parting only underscores how deeply we loved. Let’s hold onto those beautiful memories and the reasons they make saying goodbye so hard.

🥂 The Scottish Funeral Awards! 🥂

I had the privilege of attending this prestigious event with my great friend, David of . David was nominated for two major awards: Scotland's Best Celebrant and Outstanding Contribution to the Funeral Industry.

David conducted his first funeral in January of this year and very quickly established himself as a leader in the industry. I’m excited to announce that he received a Highly Recommended award in the category of Scotland's Best Celebrant—an outstanding accomplishment!

I’m so proud to have David as a friend.

National Grief Awareness Week 2024

As we observe National Grief Week, I want to take a moment to share my thoughts and experiences as a funeral celebrant. Grief is a deeply personal journey, yet it connects us all in profound ways.

In my work with Hourglass Chronicles, I have the privilege of walking alongside families during some of their most challenging moments. I’ve witnessed the power of shared stories, the healing that comes from honouring our loved ones, and the importance of allowing ourselves to feel—whether it’s sadness, anger, or even joy in the memories we cherish.

This week, I encourage everyone to embrace their own grief and support others in their journeys. Let’s create spaces where we can talk openly about our feelings, share our memories, and honour those we’ve lost. Remember, it’s okay to seek help and to lean on one another.

Together, we can transform grief into a celebration of life, fostering connections that uplift and heal.

I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to conduct Jean’s funeral. Neil’s kind words about his experience mean a lot to me.

It’s important for me to start building a relationship from my initial phone call. It is a difficult task to walk into the house of someone you don’t know, sit amongst their family, all whilst trying to gather information about their loved one’s life. There are moments of sadness as you would expect but often it is filled with laughter as we take a walk down memory lane and visit forgotten places, remember lost friends and recall so many happy times.

Thank you once again Neil for sharing your experience with others. Allowing them the opportunity to experience the same care and support in their hour of need.

"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal," the quote written by anonymous resonates deeply, reminding us of the contrast of grief and love.

When we lose someone dear, the pain can feel insurmountable. It’s a heartache that lingers, one that time may soften but never truly erase. Each moment spent with our loved ones becomes a treasured memory, yet the absence they leave behind can echo through our lives. This heartache is a testament to the depth of our love—a love that, though it may change form, remains an indelible part of who we are.

Conversely, love itself is a powerful force that goes beyond even death. It exists in the stories we share, the laughter that fills the air, and the warmth of the moments we cherished together. These memories become our sanctuary, a place where we can revisit the essence of those we've lost. They are untouched by time, safe from the clutches of loss, and serve as a reminder of the bonds that can never be broken.

🌟 Embracing the Conversation of Death 🌟

I want to dive into a subject that many shy away from: death. Yes, it’s a taboo topic, but it’s one we need to confront with open hearts and minds.

Historically, death has often been shrouded in silence. In many cultures, discussing it was seen as bad luck or even disrespectful. This led to a societal tendency to avoid the topic, leaving many unprepared and families burdened with the weight of uncertainty and guilt. But why should we fear something that is an inevitable part of life?

Talking about death can actually be empowering. It allows us to articulate our wishes, ensuring that our voices are heard even when we’re no longer here. This not only liberates us but also lifts a tremendous weight off our loved ones. Imagine the peace of mind that comes with knowing your family isn’t left guessing about your wishes or worrying if they’ve made the right decisions.

By encouraging these conversations, we can transform death from a source of dread into a celebration of life. It’s about honouring our stories, our choices, and ultimately, our legacy. Let’s embrace this topic together, expose it, and take proactive steps to ensure our decisions are made known.

Join me in breaking the silence. Share your thoughts, ask questions, and remember it’s okay to talk about death. In doing so, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world for ourselves and those we leave behind.
