Green Feather Counselling, Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy

Green Feather Counselling, Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy Counselling for children, young people, stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse and life events. I am based in Tilehurst, Reading.

Hello, I'm Rosie and I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. I work with adults and children and young people from the age of 5 years. I believe that we all have the ability to grow, heal and change, regardless of what we have experienced in life. I am committed to providing psychotherapeutic counselling in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space, where you can feel supported, listened to and accepted. I believe that everyone is unique and that people are diverse and complex. I place a strong emphasis on building a trusting, supportive and caring therapeutic relationship with you in order to create a firm foundation for the work we will do together. I believe that because of our uniqueness, there is no single approach that can treat each client in all situations. I therefore draw from a range of theories and techniques including person-centred, psychodynamic and CBT. I offer short term and open ended counselling, working alongside you at your own pace, in order to support you to uncover the root of your issues and make the changes you require in your life. I have over 20 years experience of working with children and young people and offer counselling for a wide range of issues, from the ages of 5 upwards. I offer shorter sessions for young children, where we can draw, colour and do arts and crafts, whilst we talk.

It’s no secret that the world is in a state of turmoil. Every day, there’s another headline about some new act of violence or hatred. It can be easy to get overwhelmed by all the bad news and feel like there’s nothing we can do to make a difference.

But there is something we as individuals can do. We can always choose kindness.

It may not seem like much, but choosing to be kind to our fellow human beings and the world around us can make a big difference.

When we choose to be kind, we act in ways that show compassion, concern, and thoughtfulness toward others. We show that we care about the well-being of others.

We often think of kindness as something that requires effort or time, but that is far from the truth.

Being kind can be as simple as holding the door open for someone, lending a listening ear, or letting someone go ahead of you in line. These small acts cost little in time or energy and can make a big difference.

Mental health is just like physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it.

Good mental health means being generally able to think, feel and react in the ways that you need and want to live your life.

But if you go through a period of poor mental health you might find the ways you're frequently thinking, feeling or reacting become difficult, or even impossible, to cope with.

During these times it's important to look after yourself: it's OK not to always be OK.

Today is Human Rights Day, a day to reflect on what more can be done to achieve a fairer society.

We still have a long way to go in ensuring that everyone has the rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Rights such as
- Freedom of religion and belief
- Right to privacy
- Freedom of movement and residence
- No torture or inhuman treatment
- Equal before the law
- Freedom of expression
- Right to seek asylum
- Right to education.

Remember that setbacks are opportunities for growth and that you have the inner strength to overcome challenges.

Reframe negative situations to see them as learning opportunities rather than catastrophes.

Actively focus on the good things in your life, no matter how small, to shift your focus away from what's going wrong.

By doing so, you can help yourself to move forward with a positive mindset. 💚

True impossibility comes not from the challenge itself, but from the decision not to act.

So don't be scared to take the first step. By doing so, any journey becomes possible, regardless of how difficult it seems.

Attachment is the ability to make emotional bonds with other people. It starts at birth and continues into early and later life. It is a way of relating to another person.

The type of attachment you had with your mother or main caregiver can affect your relationships as an adult. From this first attachment relationship, you have a model that affects later relationships.

An anxious attachment style can emerge when a child’s interactions with their caregiver feel inconsistent, intrusive, or overwhelming, says Dr. Sarah Bren, a licensed clinical psychologist in Pelham, New York.

When a caregiver themselves has an anxious attachment style, if they are unpredictable in how well they meet their child’s needs, or if the environment is chaotic or unpredictable, an anxious attachment can develop.

During periods of stress, low mood or anxiety, try to maintain structure, balance and routine in your life:

- establish boundaries
- manage expectations
- be gentle and compassionate with yourself
- practise empathy
- quiet your mind to prevent overthinking
- connect with other people and yourself

In her wonderful song, "Balance" Lucy Spraggan sings:

"If you could stand back, I used to say that
I thought I needed space to find my balance
But I might need a hand
So if you could be that
I might need some help to find my balance."

Never be scared or ashamed to ask for help if you are struggling to find your balance.

Always challenge your negative self-talk!

Start by following one simple rule:
Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else.

Be gentle and encouraging with yourself.

If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally and respond with affirmations of what is good about you.

Think about things you're thankful for in your life.
