Ex racehorse Primrose, chestnut, & Huggie enjoying the evening sun last night. Such lovely days & evenings at the moment!
Primrose's story, she arrived here in 2016.
Primrose was purchased by a friend I hadn't seen for several years as a horse that would be suitable for a mature lady to hack & enjoy ( so she was told)
Primrose(not her race name, changed on request by communication from Primrose)
arrived at her new home, livery yard, where she was extremely unsettled & very difficult to do anything with & very quickly became very attached to another livery horse.
My friend contacted me & explained what was going on. Between us we decided Primrose would come to mine where I would work with Primrose holistically starting with Reiki & communication to listen & understand her so as to work with her in a way that would help her with the view to Primrose returning home to my friend once we had got them going well together.
Through Reiki & communication sesions Primrose communicated she had been traumatised by racing. She had been raced from a early age, although a well bred mare she wasn't fast enough on the track. She then went to a private home for, we believe 2-3 years.
Primrose wanted a name change has her race name she was called by reminded her too much of the trauma of racing. So we changed it very slightly from Princess, to represent the sunny yellow colour of a Primrose flower.
We don't know that much about this period but my friend was told she was used for riding club & went to some shows.
So I believe the move from this home to my friends triggered Primrose's anxiety & trauma from the past.
After arriving at mine & initially doing Reiki & communication which helped us to understand her, balance her energy & ground her with Reiki we did some ground work in the arena & then progressed to riding her.
Baring in mind her anxiety we had another horse in the arena too to start with.
Primrose was very workman like to be ridden & actually went quite nicely on the flat.
As we got to know Primrose & how she behaved & watching how she interacted with us & her field companion, it was also obvious how much Primrose was shutdown & withdrawn.
She wouldn't engage with us when we were around her & not with her field companion either who was a really gentle soul.
We also realised quite quickly that sadly Primrose wasn't going to suit my mature friend.
My friend was not the sort of person to just get rid of her, so Primrose stayed with me.
It was not until approx 4 months of Primrose being with me that we started to see her engaging with us & her field companion.
Underneath she is such a sensitive soul who doesn't like change. She holds tension in her body, to which she enjoys & responds well to Reiki & being stroked gently & more recently Mastersons method on occasion with my friend Ros.
A few years back Primrose's ownership was handed over to me where she will be forever cared for by me under the the umbrella of KiEquine Healing Sanctuary.
Primrose isn't ridden now but enjoys being with her friends at Rackenford Holistic Healing & Equestrian Centre & KiEquine Healing Sanctuary.
I've been really pleased with her recently as she has been a 'big girl' & with the help of Huggie & her friends in adjacent paddocks has been able to allow her more long standing field mate to be removed from their field as they've had to go on less grass. Although she whinneyed a bit initially, she didn't run around or get stressed, which is what she would have done in the past, a massive change for her.
She is however missing her friend but is feeling the support of Huggie & the other horses. I do hope to reunite them as field companions at a later date.
Sometimes a horse's story doesn't turn out how we imagine it is going to!
It is important to listen, be the horse's advocate & do what is for their highest good always β₯οΈ
