Music (part 2)...
The last post was about how music improves exercise performance and what music is most effective. This post focusses on the degree of performance enhancement with music before, during and after exercise.
Listening to music before exercise has shown to optimise arousal, facilitate task relevant imagery and improve motor tasks. With sports, individuals and teams often enter the arena to music. The selected music may have also been associated throughout training with success or aggression. When it’s played on entering the arena, this association creates a greater arousal and can further enhance performance.
During exercise, music has consistently demonstrated its positive effect on endurance. Research shows listening to music increases
* peak and mean power
* strength
* treadmill and cycling endurance up to 15%,
* energy efficiency
I’m sure most people listen to music during their workout, but how about afterward?
Listening to relaxing music after exercise has shown to reduce heart rate, urinary protein and perceived exercise exertion.
It may not help recovery, but feeling less tired after exercise is less likely to discourage you from doing it again. So maybe incorporate music into a pre and post workout routine?

Music (part 1)...
Listening to music during a workout has been described as the “legal, performance enhancing drug.” It’s easy to see why. I’m sure you’ve psyched yourself up with music before a set and managed those extra reps. If you’re not listening to music during your workout, you may not be reaching your potential...
What music should you be listening to?
2 factors to why music can motivate are;
* rhythm response - refers to the tempo (beats per minute). We subconsciously move in time with the tempo. This is shown to distract the mind and improve endurance.
* Association - associating a piece of music with success or aggression can increase arousal and improve performance. (I doubt I’ll be adding the rocky theme tune or eye of the tiger to my gym playlist though).
Music influences mood, emotion and behaviour and can motivate you to go the gym on the days when you’re not feeling it.
Athletes who listen to music during their workout are shown to have greater endurance and power than those who don’t.
What’s the science?
The brain can only process so much information, during exercise, signals are constantly being sent to the brain to tell you how tired you’re becoming. Listening to music also sends signals to the brain to be processed, the brain can only process so much information, meaning signals of fatigue aren’t processed as quickly.
Music has shown to change the way we perceive exertion levels during exercise. It provides a pacing advantage and boosts mood and confidence. All contributing to a better gym session.
So what music should you listen to?
Research has shown that music with a higher tempo around 100-150 beats per minute provides a good pacing strategy.
This may sound obvious, but listen to music you prefer. A study showed participants who listened to their chosen music cycled further and experienced less discomfort from exercise.
Music with vocals is shown to be more motivational than a drum beat, again boosting endurance and can also provide positive affirmations.
So, set you gym playlist up and visualise yourself as rocky balboa running up all those steps (whatever works for you).

Time of day and power...
Is the time of day you’re training hindering your potential? Sports scientists are forever trying to squeeze out the best performance possible. The time of day you train is now being scrutinised.
Recent research is pointing towards aerobic and anaerobic training producing better results when performed in the evening (17:00-20:00).
•Cycling and sprint time trials have been completed quicker in the evening than the morning.
•Maximum bench press has reduced in the AM.
•Jump performance and knee extension torque have been negatively effected at 8AM when compared to 6pm.
Research is still limited but it’s suggested that hormonal responses in the evening provide a more favourable training profile for oxygen uptake and muscle anabolism.
Why?
Cortisol (stress hormone) and insulin are much higher in the morning, up to 60% higher in fact and deplete through the day.
Increased cortisol levels are expected to increase plasma glucose levels (energy), however the increased insulin levels counteract this resulting in an 11% decrease in plasma glucose in the morning. More so, growth hormone is two-fold higher in the evening then morning.
It’s suggested that these factors can impact performance. So, stay in bed the extra hour and train the evening? Sounds good to me.
