Top tips to start running
January is a common time of year to start running, but by February, many have already given up. Here are my top tips to start, and keep on, running.
1️⃣ Ease yourself in gently
We've all been there... we give this running lark a go by running our fastest to the end of the street, getting out of breath, think everyone is staring so turn round and walk home.
A better way of starting is to start slowly, and gradually build up time, distance and speed. C25k plans are a perfect way of doing this. If you need more accountability you could join your local running club beginners course
2️⃣ Dress appropriately
You don't need loads of fancy kit to start running, but a few wise choices could make all the difference. If your trainers haven't seen the light of day from the back of the cupboard for 10 years, you may want to invest in a new pair. They don't have to be expensive, but making sure they aren't worn out, full of holes and going to rub in the wrong places is a good idea.
Likewise, a decent sports bra is a must. Anyone with b***s needs good support to avoid aches and pains further down the line. Making sure it's the right size will make the difference between a comfy run and horrible underboob chafe!
3️⃣ Eat and drink well
Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated through the day, and think about when to eat around your planned run. You may find eating too close to your run will jiggle all that food around inside you with explosive consequences. At the other end of the scale, not eating enough during the day could mean you don't have the energy to complete your run comfortably.
4️⃣ Listen to your body
Starting any new exercise regime is naturally going to mean using your muscles in ways they are not used to. Listen to your body so you can understand what is a normal post exercise response, and what could be the start of an injury.
A regular maintenance sports massage can help you keep your body in tip top condition, and keep you running for longer.
