Walking is so underrated, both as a form of exercise in its own right and as part of a race strategy when running. Walking is definitely NOT cheating!

Many endurance athletes, particularly those attempting regular ultra runs and first time marathon or ironman events will need to spend time walking.

In fact for many it should or could be a sensible part of a race strategy.

Feeding periods, hills etc can be tackled easier with a fast walk compared to an energy sapping and lung busting slow run.

Yet I see so many fail to include it in their training or simply overlook the importance of training for the walking element.

To walk fast for long periods of time is in fact really hard. It isn’t something we can just turn up and do.

Yes we can shuffle slowly but that’s often what happens when we can’t run anymore.

So maybe plan to do more walk / runs or walks after runs and see them as a valid part of your training if that’s your race aim, of course there will be many who don’t plan it or need it.

But don’t feel it’s a weakness or a sign of giving up etc, and therefore some sort of avoid at all costs taboo.

With the storm due to hit with near 100mph winds tomorrow, I've decided not to open this week.

Appointments have been rearranged, and I'll be battening down the hatches and staying at home instead of travelling to clinic.

Stay safe everyone!

Turns out I've been a running coach for two years now...! 👀

I mostly use my qualification to support my treatment of running injuries, helping the return to running and planning training.

I've also been known tonwrite a nifty training plan for clients taking on anything from a return to running after a break through to half marathons and beyond!

Hands up if you've seen Encanto? 🙋‍♀️

Whilst we don't talk about Bruno, there is something I wanted to talk about today, as there's a lot we can learn from the Family Madrigal.

Today is , so I wanted to focus on Luisa. Her gift of strength means that she does all the heavy lifting for the family. But under the surface she feels that she's only worth something if she's helping.

Sound familiar? Are you the family fixer? The problem solver of your friendship group? The counsellor that people go to for all the answers?

In amongst all this helping other people, do ever just stop to take care of YOU?

As it's today, I wanted to remind you that it's ok take time out from being the strong one. It's Ok to take a break. And it's ok to ask for help for yourself.

The benefit of massage is that it forces you to take time for yourself.

A good massage also releases endorphins which help improve mood, and helps reduce cortisol levels which helps lower stress.

I also love a good natter, so if you want to unload during your massage, you can also do that too! What happens in the treatment room stays in the treatment room.

So if you need to talk, get in touch...

It's been a whole year since this photo when my Diploma arrived in the post.

Having spent the previous year going to college every other weekend, adapting to learning via zoom during lockdown, this certificate was definitely hard earned.

In the year since, we've had more lockdowns, restrictions easing then coming back and more variations we can shake a stick at!

And in between, I've grown a whole human who's now 6 months old!

So I just wanted to say thank you to the clients who have stuck with me through my training and mat leave, and more openings and closings than the hokey cokey!

You guys are awesome!

Top tips to start running

January is a common time of year to start running, but by February, many have already given up. Here are my top tips to start, and keep on, running.

1️⃣ Ease yourself in gently

We've all been there... we give this running lark a go by running our fastest to the end of the street, getting out of breath, think everyone is staring so turn round and walk home.

A better way of starting is to start slowly, and gradually build up time, distance and speed. C25k plans are a perfect way of doing this. If you need more accountability you could join your local running club beginners course

2️⃣ Dress appropriately

You don't need loads of fancy kit to start running, but a few wise choices could make all the difference. If your trainers haven't seen the light of day from the back of the cupboard for 10 years, you may want to invest in a new pair. They don't have to be expensive, but making sure they aren't worn out, full of holes and going to rub in the wrong places is a good idea.

Likewise, a decent sports bra is a must. Anyone with b***s needs good support to avoid aches and pains further down the line. Making sure it's the right size will make the difference between a comfy run and horrible underboob chafe!

3️⃣ Eat and drink well

Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated through the day, and think about when to eat around your planned run. You may find eating too close to your run will jiggle all that food around inside you with explosive consequences. At the other end of the scale, not eating enough during the day could mean you don't have the energy to complete your run comfortably.

4️⃣ Listen to your body

Starting any new exercise regime is naturally going to mean using your muscles in ways they are not used to. Listen to your body so you can understand what is a normal post exercise response, and what could be the start of an injury.

A regular maintenance sports massage can help you keep your body in tip top condition, and keep you running for longer.
