Unlock My Past is a photo scanning and video transfer business that helps our customers link their Past, Present and Future. We help our customers breathe new life into their photographic collections scanning their treasured memories captured digitally from original photographs, slides or negatives. We take great care to handle, scan, clean and present these back as digital files so they can share them amongst their family and friends and so preserve their heritage for future generations. We’ve probably all got some photographs, slides and negatives gathering dust in a cupboard somewhere, these are subject to fading, damage from damp or dust ingress and they will degrade and fade over time. You can breathe new life into them, browse them easily on your computer and be able to share them easily. We provide various service levels from the standard entry level scanning up to a professional scanning service. We use high quality scanners and we use the latest enhancing software to clean, sharpen, brighten and normalise the colours which will have faded over time. This isn’t however some robotic, machine based business; we take great care to treat our customer’s precious memories as if they were our own and we manually oversee the scanning and video transfers. We do not rely on the software alone and we hand adjust scans where needed to return the best possible results. Working with Graphic artists we can also repair damaged photographs and breathe new life back into them. We transfer Videos from tape to DVD or Blu Ray to preserve family images for future generations. Video tape, like cassette and audio tapes before them degrade sometimes because of the media itself and sometimes the actual playing equipment can damage the tape surface. After 15 years these should really be moved to another media type or the images and sounds may be lost forever. Any video tapes you may have that predate 1999 should be considered to be at risk. Why should you consider using us?
1. Quality – it’s our job day in day out and we’ve been doing this for a long time. Technology – Because it’s our business we have invested in high quality hardware and software. You would need to have over 15,000 photos to scan to cover the cost of our Kodak bulk photo scanner alone.
3. Expertise – We know our hardware and software inside out. We have scanned all sorts of pictures some going back to the 19th Century. What might take you hours will take us a few minutes.
4. Time – A home scanner can perhaps do 1 photo every 2 or 3 minutes at best. We can scan anywhere between 10 and 50 photos a minute. It certainly saves the customer toiling over a computer and scanner for days on end
5. Opportunity Cost – Once we have scanned the photographs, the donkey work if you will, you can then tag each photograph with information about where and when taken, who the people are in the shot and preserve a record for future generations.

After the two years, we have just had, with zero support from the Government, we have reluctantly decided to close the business at the end of the year. I will continue to do any work that comes in on an one2one basis but the Limited company will be set to dormant and I will look to sell the name and website.

Working on some old Super 8 Cine film that has warped and twisted and to add difficulty has been wound too tight onto the reels. No matter I've had to re do the work three times but finally I've managed to scan it by inverting the film and bending it back into shape to get it to scan properly. Sellotaped splices don't help the situation but I think I might finally have won the battle! At four hours per reel scanning time, it's been a long hard slog :-)

A personal touch and attention to detail - I doubt a film lab would have persevered to get the customers images back.

Recently a customer brought in a batch of films and unfortunately a number of them had suffered water damage and some had mould on them which, as you can imagine, has ruined the images. Whilst we were able to get some scanned images from them, the mould had left scars along the edges of some …

It's taken over 10 months to arrive (due to you know what) but finally, my new scanner is here. It allows me to scan books, magazines and pamphlets and it automatically adjusts for the curvature meaning you don't have to strain the spine, flattening the pages to scan it all. It is very rapid and it creates a searchable PDF from the scanned images.

I can now scan up to A3 (and larger if I divide the object up). I'm learning how to use it at the moment and have already archived a club's minutes and accounts going back around 40 years. I have also just scanned a 300-page book which took less than an hour.

At last, I will be able to rapidly scan documents and photograph objects too.
