A Hertfordshire film studio has been fined after asbestos was disturbed during some routine maintenance.
Staff were asked to remove wall panels to make way for new doors. They were told there was no asbestos. Next, they started dismantling the panels with hammers and crowbars. Then one worker spotted what looked like asbestos and stopped. Tests confirmed it was asbestos that needed licensed removal.
The HSE found that surveys hadn’t checked the wall panels and staff weren’t properly trained. The studio pleaded guilty and was fined £6,000, with extra costs.
This is a reminder that even minor building work to your business can be risky if asbestos isn’t properly managed.
