Self Care - a longish post
I've had some really interesting conversations lately about self care and what it means from a range of men, women and young people, boys and girls.
Discussions centering around the pressures of knowing self care is needed but that the thought of doing it can be seen as a pressure in itself. So it then becomes a vicious circle.
Others looked at the different types of self care from physical to emotional, environmental to spiritual to name a few. How self care isn't just about nice baths and sitting reading a bòok. It can be about switching the news off or cleaning out that one cupboard you've been talking about doing. How to self care around exam time has been a hot topic too.
Self care is very individual, what it means and looks like to you isn't necessarily how it looks to me. However, I would offer you an invitation to be compassionate, gentle and kind to yourself. Ask yourself what do I need right now.
If self care is something that has been lacking then jumping straight in at the deep end is potentially going to be too much and too overwhelming. You wouldn't give yourself a huge meal if you hadn't eaten for a while because you may not feel very well afterwards. So little and often would be the suggestion. One way of describing that in one conversation was to drip feed yourself small amounts of self care.
To give you some examples of my own self care recently have included -
My allotment - over the winter it's become very overgrown and I'd been putting it off tackling it. So the task has become a little overwhelming. However, it's important to me, I enjoy being outside and I quite like digging and growing. So I've begun to tackle it in small chunks. Not pressurising myself to get the whole lot done in one go. Just little and often and I've found beetroot and potatoes growing in amongst the weeds, bonus!
My fitness - I used to be really fit and have wanted to regain some of that back, but a fear of looking silly and not being able to keep up has stopped me. But those thoughts have been thrown to oneside, I've put on my lycra and joined a local jogging club. I can't run for toffee but it was a great laugh with a group of women who were also beginners. It feels good even if I do ache!!
So I guess the message I'm trying to convey here is that self care is just that - care of Self, yourself. Focus on what it means to you because you are absolutely worth it. Notice the feeling it gives you, and take time for you. 😊
