We’re proud to announce that University Hospitals Ayr and Crosshouse are now offering point of care troponin testing in both our Emergency Departments (ED) and Combined Assessment Units (CAU).

What is troponin?

Troponin is a protein found in muscles, including the heart. When the heart is injured, such as during a heart attack, troponin levels rise in the blood.
Previously, patients had to wait for lab results. Now, with point of care testing, results are available in just 15 minutes.

This means:
• Faster diagnosis for suspected heart attacks
• Quicker access to the right treatment
• Reduced waiting times, especially out of hours
• Fewer patients breaching the four-hour target

This innovation will help us deliver safer, faster, and more effective care for patients when every minute matters.

🎄 12 Days Of A Safe Christmas Day 4 ⚠️

Continuing bite-sized tips & guidance, our partners at NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Prevention & Service Support Team (Prevention & Service Support Team - NHS Ayrshire & Arran) are today talking about ketamine - a drug that can produce dissociative sensations and hallucinations.

Key risks:
* Painful "K cramps"
* Serious bladder problems
* Delirium
* Amnesia
* Impaired motor function
* Risk of overdose
* Dangerously slow breathing that can be fatal
* Mental health problems

Ketamine is currently controlled as a Class B substance. Taking too much can lead to what is known as a "K-Hole" - a terrifying feeling of sensory detachment that is likened to a near-death experience.

Mixing ketamine with co***ne increases overdose risk. Like co***ne, ketamine is often mixed with other dangerous substances - increasing the risk of the adverse effects mentioned.

Staying informed helps keep you and your friends safer ♥️

🎄 12 Days of a Safe Christmas Day 3 - Cocaethylene (Alcohol + Co***ne) ⚠️❗

Today we’re focusing on a combination that’s far more dangerous than most people realise. When alcohol and co***ne are used together, the body creates a toxic chemical called cocaethylene, and it’s up to three times more harmful than either drug on its own.

Here’s what you need to know:
✔ Cocaethylene puts huge strain on the heart, increasing risks of stroke, heart attack, irregular heartbeat and sudden death (up to 18–25 times higher).
✔ It affects the brain, leading to poor judgement, impulsive decisions, low mood, panic attacks and increased suicidal thoughts.
✔ It stays in your system twice as long as co***ne.
✔ It raises blood pressure, increases aggressive or violent thoughts and builds up toxic levels in the liver.
✔ Co***ne + alcohol is one of the most common drug combinations linked to death.

People often use both on nights out without realising what their body is actually creating, or how high the risks really are. Your health matters, and understanding this could save a life. ❤️

👉 Join us tomorrow for Day 4 - Ketamine as we keep breaking down important info to help you stay safer this festive season. 🎁✨
