IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR EXPECTANCE PARENTS – main entrance road closure on Monday 23 March 2026 from 7pm to 4am

Due to essential resurfacing works, the main road in front of the Trelawny entrance to Princess Alexandra Maternity Wing/Emergency Department, will be closed on Monday night from 7pm to 4am. Please see the map below.

We want to reassure all expectant parents that:

• You can still reach Princess Alexandra Maternity Wing/Emergency Department safely at any time.
• If you are in labour or attending with an emergency or concern, please use Penventinnie Lane from the A390 between Treliske roundabout and Truro Golf Club (usually a bus route).
• Follow the road directly to the Princess Alexandra Maternity Wing (PAMW)/Emergency Department.
• Although Penventinnie Lane includes a bus only section, you are allowed to use this route during the closure.
• Maternity staff, site marshals, and switchboard will all be aware of the diversion.

Thank you for your patience while we make these essential improvements.

Key:
Red zone – closed section of road.
Orange line – exit back onto Penventinnie Lane.
Green line – vehicle access.
Blue line – bus route.

A Huge Thank You to the First 100 Families!

We want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 100 people who have joined the Generation Study here at Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust . Your participation is helping to shape the future of newborn healthcare and making a real difference for families across the country.

The Generation Study is a pioneering national research programme delivered by Genomics England in partnership with the NHS. It aims to sequence the genomes of 100,000 newborn babies to screen for over 200 rare but treatable genetic conditions. This early insight can support quicker diagnosis, more timely treatment, and better long‑term health outcomes for children.

The study also supports vital research into how genes influence health and explores the potential benefits of securely storing genomic data to support future NHS care.

We’re incredibly proud that RCHT has now recruited 100 participants—a significant milestone and a testament to the dedication of our research teams and the generosity of participating families.

Thank you for helping us lead the way in this groundbreaking study. Together, we are shaping the future of child health.

Looking for antenatal classes?

We are pleased to be able to offer our ‘bitesize’ antenatal education videos, featuring staff from the maternity team, that you have access to throughout your pregnancy and can be watched at any time, as many times as you like!
These videos cover topics from consent and making informed decisions, to the care you will be offered in labour and what to expect after the birth of your baby. https://www.youtube.com//playlists

Face to face sessions on birth planning and baby care run with local midwifery teams, so you have a chance to meet other people going through similar experiences and ask the team questions. Speak to your midwife for more information.

You also have access to online courses on parenting, childhood development and a full antenatal course delivered by the Solihull approach, these have also been translated into Arabic, Urdu, Polish and Welsh. Visit https://inourplace.co.uk/ and use the access code TAMAR.

Finally our specialist infant feeding team host a 2 hour session on Microsoft Teams on the first Friday and Saturday of each month about preparing for feeding and bonding with your baby rchtMaternityNattersKenwyn@nhs.onmicrosoft.com/" rel="ugc" target="_blank">https://outlook.office.com/book/rchtMaternityNattersKenwyn@nhs.onmicrosoft.com/

We are proud to be part of the Generation Study at RCHT

This national research project, led by Genomics England, offers newborns the chance to have their whole genome sequenced from a single cord blood sample at birth to help identify 200+ rare but treatable genetic conditions early - so families can access the right care sooner.

If you are pregnant, over 16, and expecting one baby, you are eligible to take part. Participation is voluntary and in addition to the standard Newborn Blood Spot test, participating in the study won’t affect the ability to have optimal cord clamping.

Some important information for families during power outage and storms. We know how difficult it is out there for some families today but here are some important reminders.

Formula feeding - Safe formula feeding is incredibly important. To be safe formula must be made with recently boiled, cooled water. If you are unable to boil water please do not make formula with unboiled tap water. It is recommended that you use pre made formula available from supermarkets. For more information on how to formula feed safely please check https://www.nhs.uk/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/making-up-baby-formula/

Safe sleeping - During power outage and extreme cold weather it may be tempting to wrap your baby up in bedding or bring them into bed with you. Safe sleep guidelines remain important even during adverse weather events. Please check out https://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/baby-safety/travel-and-weather/cold-weather/

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) is participating in the Generation Study, a national initiative led by Genomics England and NHS England. The study offers whole genome sequencing for newborns to detect over 200 rare but treatable genetic conditions early, enabling timely interventions that could save lives.

RCHT aims to enrol at least 550 babies over 13 months, with expectant parents informed during pregnancy and cord blood samples taken shortly after birth. Results are shared within weeks, and families receive ongoing support.
