Early one Sunday morning, we received a call from a truly wonderful carer looking after an elderly couple.
She was understandably anxious; the gentleman had sadly passed away, and after contacting another funeral director, she had been told they were unable to attend due to the circumstances; his next of kin being very sick and the carer wasn’t aware of his funeral wishes.
With no other family and his dear wife very poorly and mostly asleep, the situation felt incredibly overwhelming for her.
She worried that if one funeral director had declined, others might too.
I gently reassured her that we would take care of everything, no matter how difficult the situation is.
Within 45 minutes, we were there, quietly and respectfully bringing him into our care.
After several phone calls, I was able to trace his solicitor to understand his wishes.
Around this time, his dear wife woke, and I was able to visit her in person.
When I arrived at the park home, space was very limited, she kindly asked if I would mind sitting in her wheelchair next to her bed, which, I must say, was very comfortable.
We spent some precious time together, chatting about their life, how they met as teenagers, married in 1966, and the love he had for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
I reassured her that he was resting peacefully with us, just a mile away, and that he was being cared for with the utmost dignity and respect.
To ease her burden, I registered his death today on her behalf.
His wishes for a direct cremation have now been arranged. He will make his final journey with his beloved Wolverhampton shirt resting proudly on his coffin, accompanied by the music of his team as he enters the chapel.
We will take photographs and create a keepsake video for his dear wife, so she can see the care and love shown to George, from the comfort of her hospital bed, when we return him home.
No matter how complex or challenging the circumstances may be, we will always be there, offering support, reassurance, and compassion when families need it most, and doing everything we can to ease any worry ❤️
