When a friend or relative is ready to leave hospital, home is often the best place for them to rest, recover and regain independence.

Getting them home at the right time supports their recovery and helps keep hospital care flowing, as even short delays in discharge can add pressure to busy hospital wards.

If possible, make plans early in the day, with the aim of getting home by lunchtime. To help with this, you might be entitled to a one-off personal health budget to pay for extra support or equipment needed when you at home? Ask a member of staff on the ward to find out more about this.

Every hour matters. Avoidable delays in discharge - even just a few hours - add significant pressure to our hospitals. When your relative is medically fit, bringing them home before lunch helps their wellbeing and allows us to care for others waiting for a bed.

Please make arrangements early in the day so we can keep care flowing for everyone who needs it.

Cornwall's hospitals are under significant pressure today, and you can help by choosing the right NHS service for your needs. Here's some information from Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust on where is best if you need help.

Our hospitals are under significant pressure today, and you can help by choosing the right NHS service for your needs. If you’re feeling unwell or need advice, start with NHS 111 online or by phone. They can guide you to the most appropriate care, whether that’s a pharmacy, a minor injury unit, or an urgent treatment centre. Pharmacies are a great option for minor illnesses and can help you avoid unnecessary trips to hospital. Please keep 999 for life-threatening emergencies only, such as someone who is unconscious, not breathing, or bleeding heavily. Every time you choose the right service, you help us keep emergency care available for those who need it most.

Tamsin Melville joined us from BBC Cornwall to get a behind the scenes look at how our 111 Clinical Advisory Service alongside the specialist falls team work together to relieve pressures on South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, the emergency department and other NHS community services across Cornwall.

Efforts to relieve pressure on an emergency department are making an impact according to NHS bosses.

Cornwall Council's Sixty Over Sixty campaign is celebrating people aged 60+ who inspire others and make a real difference in their communities – from volunteering and mentoring to supporting neighbours and leading local projects.

If you know someone who deserves recognition, now’s the time to nominate them. Their story could inspire others to live and age well too.

👉 Nominate someone who inspires you today:
www.cornwall.gov.uk/council-news/health-wellbeing-and-social-care/search-begins-for-cornwall-s-sixty-over-sixty/

Our 60 Over 60 campaign is back, celebrating people who prove that age is no barrier to making a difference.

We’re looking for 60 of Cornwall’s most inspiring residents aged 60 and over, and we need your nominations.

This campaign recognises the passion, achievements, and valuable contributions that older people make to communities across Cornwall every day.

Get involved by nominating yourself or someone else who truly deserves recognition.
