Some of these are so good

When I find myself feeling triggered, I try to pause to ask, “Is there a boundary I need to set and hold here?” When I find myself agitated with a behavior or feeling overwhelmed it often means either a boundary of mine has been crossed and I need to be mindful of holding it, or I need to set a new one.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish and it doesn’t have to be divisive. We can validate someone’s intention and let them know what to expect and how they can show up in a way that works for us, too. It’s SO hard not to scoop a kiddo up and shower them in love and it’s really important to teach physical and sexual consent starting in early childhood. Both can be true.

Let’s start with connection and then set expectations. Maybe you have shared values with a different approach to how to get there. Perhaps you have different values and boundaries allow you to keep someone in your life without hurting you.

When you set the boundary, it’s okay if the other person experiences hard feelings in reaction. It’s okay if they’re disappointed. The goal is not that we are happy all of the time, it’s that we can move through hard things together.

What challenges or questions come up for you around boundaries? Where would you like to dive deeper?
