High cortisol levels! There is so much out there telling us it really isn’t good for us… especially when we’re experiencing prolonged chronic stress. But before I carry on, it’s important to understand that, raised cortisol is a normal and essential hormonal function for all of us. It naturally rises in the morning as part of our circadian rhythm, helping us feel alert, focused, and ready to take on the day. It’s also a key part of our fight-or-flight response, giving us quick energy, sharpening our focus, regulating blood sugar, supporting blood pressure, and helping us respond to unexpected situations.
However, long-term elevated cortisol is another story. When cortisol remains high for extended periods, it can begin to affect multiple bodily systems in negative ways, including:
• immune system suppression - more frequent illness
• Disrupted sleep - fatigue, insomnia, poor recovery
• Increased abdominal fat and metabolism imbalance
• Elevated blood glucose - insulin resistance risk
Strain on the cardiovascular system - higher risk of heart disease
• Negative impact on cognitive function - brain fog, poor concentration
• Increased anxiety and low mood
• Musculoskeletal system – joint, muscle and connective tissue pain
So, listen to your body. If you’re feeling tired, overwhelmed, or constantly run down…rest. Take a break and allow your mind and body to reset cortisol naturally through sleep, relaxation, gentle movement, natural light, and holistic therapies… find your reset ritual that works for you.
Your mind and body will thank you. 🧡
