Many doctors, other professionals’ researchers and indeed a huge majority of people believe that BMI is an outdated and limiting tool limited tool for numerous reasons.
• It doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat or reflect fat distribution.
• It fails to account for ethnic, gender, and genetic differences.
• Better measures (like waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage, and metabolic health indicators) are increasingly preferred.
• It is detrimental to many eating disorder patients seeking the medical support they need and deserve.
How many people reading this have been discriminated against because of their BMI?

On our recent live NEDDE training on AuDHD we were incredibly fortunate to have four amazing professionals discussing their lived experiences of being both ADHD and Autistic of which the delegates were so grateful to learn from. Research suggests that 50-70% of autistics are also ADHD (Wang et al., 2017) and yet until 2014, you could not be diagnosed as AuDHD, it was believed that you could only be ADHD or Autistic, how was that even possible? How many of you have only recently recognised that you are indeed both, and how many professionals working therapeutically are seeing this more and more of both in your clients?

Awareness of sensory differences cultivates empathy, patience, and social acceptance. It challenges the idea that everyone experiences the world the same way and promotes respect for neurodiversity as a normal part of human variation. Understanding sensory sensitivities in neurodivergent individuals is not just about accommodation—it’s about valuing diverse ways of experiencing the world and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Even as a neurodivergent individual with list of ND labels that take a while to write down, I had 'missed' neurodivergence in certain clients, especially those whose mask for survival was so firmly embedded in the very essence of their being and for that I am truly sorry. Following on from the latter, I enjoyed the analogy of the telescope, as now we all know what we now know, I believe that we have a societal obligation to ensure accommodations are threaded throughout our society. Like so many other things in life, once something is truly seen and understood it is hard to be unseen and I feel that is now the case for neurodivergent individuals, for which I am so grateful for.

Why Stopping for a Break Matters for Neurodivergent People
1. Preventing Sensory and Cognitive Overload
Neurodivergent brains often process more sensory and environmental input at once.
• Breaks give the nervous system time to reset before overload leads to shutdown, meltdown, or burnout.
2. Managing Energy Levels (“Spoons” or “Battery Life”)
Many neurodivergent people describe energy as limited and easily depleted.
Pausing conserves energy, helping avoid burnout and long recovery periods.
3. Supporting Executive Function
ADHD and autism both affect executive functioning (planning, switching tasks, regulating focus).
• Breaks provide space to regroup, organize thoughts, and return with more clarity.
4. Regulating Emotions
Strong emotions (frustration, excitement, anxiety) can build quickly.
Time out allows for emotional self-regulation and reduces the chance of conflict or overwhelm.
5. Restoring Focus and Productivity
Instead of “pushing through” and losing efficiency, a short pause can improve attention span and task performance.
Breaks can reset the dopamine/reward system that ADHD brains rely on.
6. Preventing Masking Exhaustion
Many autistic and ADHD people mask to fit social or workplace expectations.
Breaks provide moments of authenticity and relief from constant self-monitoring.
7. Supporting Body Needs
Neurodivergent people may miss hunger, thirst, or tiredness cues.
Scheduled breaks encourage reconnection with physical needs (food, water, rest, movement).
In short:
For neurodivergent individuals, breaks aren’t laziness or procrastination — they’re a vital self-regulation tool that protects wellbeing, improves functioning, and reduces long-term burnout

How many of us use food to regulate our emotions either by overeating (refined carbohydrates and refined sugars) or by restricting our eating? How many of us use food or semi /starvation or starvation in order to numb our emotions in a desperate attempt to silence the nagging voices resulting from our own internal pain? Finally, how many of us have an unhealthy and obsessive relationship with food often to the detriment of our own personal relationships?
As a counsellor specialising in Eating Disorders and Obesity I am often moved whilst observing the constant battle my clients have endured in order to have the courage to say goodbye or indeed change often the most intensive relationship they have ever had! Time and time again whilst working with this client group it is in my experience that at one stage, food or the controlling refusal of food, became, a friend before it then became a relentless and punishing enemy.
I work as a BACP (Accred) Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Qualified Clinical Supervisor. I am a Master Practitioner in my field and passionate in everything regarding the work that I do and in supporting my clients into achieving the very best they can ever be.
I work in an Integrative way which is my deliberate choice after many years of working in this field, as fundamentally it draws together distinct models of counselling and psychotherapy which are used together in a converging way rather than in separate pieces. I use different approaches directly tailored to suit the requirements of my clients and yet mainly draw from Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy , Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy all of which I have training in.
