It’s never too early or too late to assess and address balance and coordination issues. Even if only to improve your golf or tennis game! Problems with the brain’s ‘information processing system’ can deteriorate for a number of benign reasons and can be remedied and rehabilitated. Just one simple way of checking if you might have an issue is if standing with your feet together and with eyes closed you start to sway in a particular direction. Another way is to march on the spot with your eyes closed for 30 seconds and see if you end up rotated or some way away from your starting position. There are many more tests we can do which involve testing different aspects of your vestibular system. I think it’s particularly important to enter middle age and beyond with good balance and coordination to help ensure you don’t develop postural problems and muscle imbalances and that you help bulletproof yourself for your later years.
