A Christmas Thank You to Our Amazing Clients (and Their Lovely Dogs!) From a proud and happy Auntie Tx

As Christmas is only days away and the year draws to a close, I just want to say a huge thank you to all my wonderful clients and, of course, to the very special dogs who trot, hobble, bounce, and sometimes zoom through my door for physiotherapy. 🐾

It’s been a privilege to support so many dogs on their journeys—whether that’s recovering from injury, building strength, staying comfortable as they age, or simply moving more happily through life. Every tail wag, small improvement, and determined effort means so much to me, and I’m constantly inspired by how resilient and trusting your dogs are.

Thank you to the owners too, for your commitment, patience, and love. Your dedication to your dogs’ wellbeing is what makes progress possible, and it’s truly a joy to work alongside you.

I hope this Christmas brings you plenty of rest, happiness, and quality time with your four-legged family members. May the New Year be filled with good health, gentle walks, strong bodies, and lots of muddy paws and cuddles.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🎄🐶

Merlin and I want to tell you about Winter Safety and How to Protect Your Pet During Cold Weather ❄️🐾

As temperatures drop, it’s important for dog owners to take proactive steps to ensure their pets remain safe, healthy, and comfortable. Winter conditions can pose risks ranging from frostbite, strains to chemical exposure, but with the right precautions, you can help your dog navigate the season with ease. Below are key guidelines to keep your canine companion protected throughout the colder months.

1. Monitor Outdoor Exposure 🐕❄️

Cold weather affects dogs differently depending on breed, age, coat type, and overall health. Limit outdoor time during extreme cold and always observe your dog for signs of discomfort such as shivering, slowed movement, or paw lifting. Senior dogs and short-haired breeds are especially vulnerable.

2. Protect Paw Health 🦶🧴

Snow, ice, and de-icing chemicals can irritate and damage a dog’s paw pads. After each walk, thoroughly wipe your dog’s paws to remove salt or chemical residue. Using protective booties or applying a paw balm can help prevent cracking and discomfort.

3. Maintain Proper Insulation 🧥🌨️

Wet fur loses its insulating properties, making it harder for dogs to regulate their temperature. Dry your dog thoroughly after exposure to snow or rain. For smaller breeds, senior dogs, or those with thin coats, consider using a properly fitted winter jacket or sweater during outdoor activities.

4. Prevent Toxic Exposure ⚠️🚗

Antifreeze spills are a common winter hazard, and even small amounts can be fatal to pets. Keep your dog away from driveways, garages, and vehicles where leaks may occur. Store all chemicals securely and clean spills immediately.

5. Adjust Nutrition and Activity 🍲

Some dogs may require increased caloric intake during winter, especially if they spend significant time outdoors or less if they are becoming couch potatoes!. If your dog is on a prescription diet please consult your veterinarian before making dietary changes. When outdoor exercise is limited due to weather, provide indoor enrichment such as puzzle feeders, training exercises, or low-impact play.

6. Provide Warm Indoor Sleeping Areas 🛏️

Ensure your dog has a draft-free, comfortable sleeping area. Elevated beds with blankets or orthopaedic padding (as long as they can easily get in them as some dogs with joint problems struggle) but it can help retain warmth, especially for older dogs or those with joint issues.

By taking these precautions, dog owners can help their pets stay safe and comfortable throughout the winter season. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your dog enjoys the colder months with minimal risk. 🐾❄️

This week's sudden cold snap is a reminder that winter is on the way, and we won't be the only ones feeling it 🥶

Small pets, like rabbits and guinea pigs, need extra care during this time of year. Guinea pigs are happiest when the temperature is between 15-20 degrees, and rabbits originally lived in burrows which protected them from the cold, wind, and rain.

So imagine how they feel when the temperature suddenly drops? You can keep your small pets happy and healthy during the winter by following our tips ❄️

Thank you for all the referrals....I have had a number of referrals emailed to me whilst working in Italy. On receiving each one I sent a thank you and update on when I will be returning as I have done before...however for some reason I don't think the emails have been delivered as a few veterinarians have emailed to enquire when I will be seeing their client. I am sorry about this so posting this email to advise I will be returning next week and will be in touch with your client(s)

Is it too hot to walk your dog? ☀️

As temperatures climb, it's important to be mindful of your dog's safety during walks.

More dogs die from hot walks than in hot cars. Your dog depends on you to make the right call. When in doubt, sit the walk out.

Typically, you can walk your dog at temperatures below 20°c. While most dogs are comfortable walking between 15°c and 25°c, individual factors like age, breed, coat type, and fitness level play a significant role in how well they tolerate the heat.

Check out the table below to see how your dog’s breed and health may affect their ability to handle the heat.
